CoroCoro unveils crapton of new mega evolutions

And none of them are Lati@s. Of course we have the very expected Mega Sceptile and Mega Swampert. The former is Grass/Dragon, while the latter remains Water/Ground. So I guess at least Mega Sceptile gets an interesting typing, and it already has all the major Dragon moves bar Draco Meteor, which if Ampharos and Charizard are any indication it won't be getting anyway.

We're also getting a Mega Diancie right off the bat, and its ability so far is listed as being unknown. I gotta say, it feels weird to have a mega evolution introduced so soon after the Pokémon first becomes available, but I guess they realized how badly they messed Diancie up. The ability still remaining undisclosed gives me some hope, though Trollfreak is Trollfreak...

Finally, Atom Kyogre and Atom Groudon are a thing. Serebii's wording seems to say they're megas, but if that's the case, then why aren't they Mega Kyogre and Mega Groudon? This is important because mega evolutions get stat boosts, but alternate forms don't, aside from Rotom. Alternate forms can also be triggered through some other means than a held item, but not megas. And as I've mentioned in a blog post a while ago, if they were to be given perma-weather abilities (as in, abilities that'd work the way Drizzle and Drought did in gens 3 through 5), alternate forms would do the job much better than megas anyway. (This has changed quickly: see edit below for details.)

Pokémon Get TV promised us a scoop in the June 15 episode... is it going to be a repeat of what we found today, or something actually new? As much as I'm tempted to say the former, it was its predecessor that first made it clear we were going to get a Fairy type, although they lied on its type matchups. (Yes, I'm still bitter about that, if you couldn't tell.) So see you in a week, one way or the other!

Edit: Information coming in fast! Mega Sceptile has... LIGHTNINGROD?!? Well, that's kind of a waste, since Grass/Dragon has a 4x resistance to Electric, but the special attack boost... well, let's wait until we know its stat spread, okay? To be fair, saying no to Volt Switch and Thunder Wave is great, but I can't help but think it needed much more. Mega Swampert has Swift Swim, which is also not such a good choice. Someone at Gamefreak REALLY likes Blaziken!

Anyway, as far as Kyogre and Groudon go, the "Atom" term seems to have been a mistranslation of sorts, it seems to be either "primal", "primordial" or "primeval", and this whole thing is related to a phenomenon called "ancient devolution". Serebii also put the term "mega evolution" in quotes, hinting that even he may not be sure whether it's one or not.

Finally, all the major characters of Team Aqua and Team Magma, as well as Brendan and May, received redesigns. Not sure why they did that, they didn't make such stark changes in other remakes (other than replacing Kris with Lyra). Oh well. By the way, Steven seems to have a Mega Charizard X. I'm sort of disappointed... they seem dead set on shoving that thing down our throats as much as humanly possible, not to mention, Charizard has nothing to do with Steven's mineral theme, unlike, say, freaking Mega Aggron.

  1. I'm not surprised we got Mega forms of Swampert and Sceptile, it would seem unbalanced if that were not the case. Now, the question is, who to use during the first playthrough of ORAS? I want to use Blaziken, but if the mega stones are exclusive depending on who you pick as a starter, I'll want to use one of the other two in order to get a stone I don't already have.

    1. Just as a heads-up, I edited that post not long before you posted this. Things changed QUICK.

    2. Yeah, it seems Blaziken is still the champion in the gen 3 arena, depending on stat spreads, of course. I think Steven would have been a great opportunity to introduce Mega Metagross, because it sure needs it. I'm disappointed that that's not the case. Here's hoping Steven is the champion instead of Wallace! Wallace being the champion in Emerald was more of a continuation of the story from Ruby and Sapphire, though, so I'm willing to bet it's going to be Steven.

    3. Keep in mind that absence doesn't equal non-existence. For all we know S.S. has other megas but just has on hand other pokes. All just the more to wait and see. Either way, ORAS looks a lot more than mere simple remakes. Oh how much the philosophy changed since FRLG. That said, anyone else wondering how they'll manage maintaining compatibility with XY if the data in those games for these Megas and stuff aren't there?

    4. I think that kind of stuff can be patched in. Don't quote me on that, though.

    5. You think they would've gone the patching route with the Lati@s data if that were the case, but we are talking about GameFreak here.

    6. How do we know they won't? The fact that they look the exact same is pretty weird.

    7. *You'd

I just realized that accidentally omitting one letter changed the whole meaning and tone of what I said. English is a funny language.

    8. I understood what you meant perfectly, though.

    9. Should be patchable, I know you can't play online unless you get the patch, may make it so that you can't connect your XY to an ORAS game without it either. Kind of annoying but it seems at least possible. It's what I thought too, but knowing Nintendo the obvious choice of action isn't necessarily the first choice....

  2. After hearing that Mega Sceptile gets lightning rod, my fingers are crossed for Levitate Mega Swellow.

  3. Of course GetTV is just going to restate this corocoro. Why wouldn't it? The episode airs the same day this was SUPPOSED to come out. We' weren't even supposed to see this stuff at all until then.

  4. I thought I misread the part on serebii that said Lightning rod and swift swim belonging to the other starters and it instead belonged to groudon and kyogre. So I guess things could be worse... Then again that Kyogre's ability isn't confirmed so I wouldn't let my guard down yet...

  5. Regarding GetTV I wouldn't bother watching for info (will be a rehash likely) but they might have new game footage, that could be worth waiting for someone to upload to youtube, perhaps. At least I only looked to those shows for the footage more than the info.

  6. I didn't notice before but Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip have new artwork in the scans. Hopefully this means new artwork for all the Gen III Pokemon, then.

    1. The gen 5 starters had new artwork in BW2, but that was only them.
