Poll change + glitchiness ahoy!

For some reason, about half of the poll's votes were somehow lost overnight. Fortunately I jotted down last night's results, so I might as well end the poll now. I'll be honest: the results were a bit of a shocker. Generation 3 dominated with 89 votes, and generations 1, 2, 4 and 5 were locked in a fierce battle, almost dead even the whole time. They ended up getting 66, 70, 61 and 63 votes respectively. The reason why I say I'm surprised is that even though, as a whole, we're more accepting of new Pokémon than other communities, I still expected the first two gens to take the cake easily. Instead, gen 3 pulls out a decent gap and wins. I wonder if there are two or three individual Pokémon that singlehandedly caused that? Oh, and gen 1 was dead last at some point as well, can't forget about that.

The next poll is also very straightforward: which home console is your all-time favorite? Of course we're not counting backwards compatibility in this, else there'd be no reason to vote for the Gamecube or PS2, for example. Vote away!

  1. PS2 for me. I only recently got into the games, but it surprised me how vast the library was. Silent Hill, Ratchet, Fatal Frame, Shadow of the Colossus/Ico, the Metal Gear Solid games, Xenosaga, the Tales games, the Jak games... It's an incredible system. Current gen systems, namely the Wii and the PS3, come close, and the SNES has a special place in my heart. I think a lot of people will vote for the N64, but I view that console as a transition phase for 3D gaming. It had a few gems, hidden and otherwise, but all in all it was where technology was evolving. I enjoyed the Gamecube much more, and that's another worthy console.

I don't care for the Xbox systems at all, and the same goes for anything that Sega made.

  2. I voted for the SNES, even though I actually "skipped" that era during my childhood and went straight to the N64 when I received one for my 5th birthday (Which replaced my dad's NES), I still manage to feel nostalgic about it.
I believe that era was when Nintendo really started to shape the video game industry and is what leaded them to be what they are today. So many franchises had great games on this console. Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda : A Link to the Past, Kirby Super Star, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country 1&2, Star Fox... Without forgetting all the amazing third party games like Final Fantasy IV and VI, Demon Crest, Chrono Trigger and countless of others.
They are all still considered great games even by today's standards and most of them had remakes that brought us much joy.
I don't really know if it counts as nostalgia if it wasn't really a part of my childhood, but this is my opinion and I wanted explain why.

  3. I'm going with the Wii, as my top two favourite games (Skyward Sword and Super Mario Galaxy 2) are for that console. But including handheld systems, I would have went with the 3DS.

  4. I think the reason why generation 3 was ahead by so much was because of the whole "so i herd u liek mudkipz" thing

    1. Yeah, but the people who still somehow find it funny aren't legion around here.

    2. Yea maybe so, but still i imagine there were still some people who did vote for gen 3 because of mudkip, and you combine that with people who favorite other gen 3 pokemon is probably why it pulled ahead. Overall i was satisfied with this poll because it shows that not only are we more welcoming to gen 5 then other people, but we still appreciate and remember older gens for what they are.

    3. Gen 3 does have a lot of fan favourites though: Sceptile, Blaziken, Absol, Salamence, Flygon, Kyogre and Groudon, the Lati twins etc.

  5. I voted gen 2 so I'll share my suprise with that one.

Now, this is where I will openly cop flak for having my nostalgia glasses on but to me the 64 is where it all started.

It had a lot of great games, innovative controls and best of all it was not just 2 players, but four. Amazing, right?

In all seriousness, I grew up with a Nintendo 64. Heck, I still have it today. I can't sell the games, not because nobody will buy them but because I can't part ways with it due to it's value I have for it. so yes, call me a nostalgia fanboy but the 64 to me was where it all began.

  6. Voted for the Gamecube. So far, Nintendo has for the most part had a monopoly on my childhood, apart from my playing a friend's PS1 (I admit that I have a soft spot for Spyro and Croc).

I may be a bit of a strange case, but I grew up with the SNES, yet completely skipped the N64. I feel fortunate to have had Super Mario All-Stars, Yoshi's Island, Super Star Wars, and A Link to the Past, among several others. I played them all to death many times over.

There was therefore something very earth-shatteringly impressive about the Gamecube's lineup, probably BECAUSE I had skipped the nascent gameplay and graphics of the N64 (for reference, I am 20 years old). I am not nearly good enough with words to describe how impressive it was for my eyes to witness the sheer eye candy of Star Wars Rogue Leader, Luigi's Mansion, or even Super Mario Sunshine.

Nostalgia aside, the main thing I like about the Gamecube era is just how well the games controlled, and likewise how fun it was to just mess around. This was really the last Nintendo generation that I consistently felt in complete control on the on-screen characters. The Wii has been somewhat hit-and-miss in this regard. But to be fair, the Wii comes in a very close second because it's home to my two favorite games: SSBB (a.k.a. Nintendo porn) and TLoZ: Twilight Princess (coming from knowing absolutely nothing about 3-D TLoZ games. If only everyone were so lucky.)

My personal top 5 favorite GCN games: Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros Melee, Animal Crossing, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, Super Monkey Ball 2.

There are still many games that I have not yet played, particularly for the Wii (namely Galaxy 2 and Skyward Sword). So feel free to have a different opinion, as always. Also I have yet to play TLoZ: The Wind Waker. When I do, I want it to be a fresh experience. It kills me to not watch your LP, Slow! :(

  8. PS2. It's the only console I bought hundreds of games for, and when it was around (at least within my social circle) it was the only console everyone played universally.

I was tempted to whip out an "Other" though for the DS/DSlite. Or even the 3DS, though the only game I've played extensively of it is LoZ:OoT3D, and that's.. well, a remake. xD

    1. The poll is for home consoles though, and last time I checked, the DS and 3DS aren't home consoles.

    2. So what would your favourite console be, then?

  9. PS2. Easily. Some of my favourite games like the GTA series, Prince of Peria Sands trilogy, etc were introduced to me on the PS2. It still gets support from Sony. Very little but its gets it nonetheless.
