Worst missable ever in a game?

Since the subject popped up on this blog last week. (Missables caused by glitches don't count, in the interest of fairness, so that leaves out the Deku Nut upgrade from some releases of OoT, for example.)

My vote goes to the Ing Webtrap scan from Metroid Prime 2. Would you believe some people use the "the camera zooms in on it, so you should know to scan it" excuse? Bullshit. In every single Metroid Prime game, any instance of you being locked in a room to fight enemies is done by a standard locked door... EXCEPT this one. Now the big problem is that while such missable scans are fairly common in those games, this one happens in the heat of the action. You have to remember to take a few seconds of your time to just take those hits from the Ing that are relentlessly attacking you just to scan the thing. Most other missables, like the Lightbringers and Weblings in the same Dark Agon area, are located in places where you're in full-on exploration mode, so you're less likely to forget to scan them. The Ing Webtrap, on the other hand? Nope, you're too busy fighting. Fuck this thing.

  1. The guide I was using managed to tell me of the Ing Webtrap in the nick of time, I'm not saying it's well handled though. My personal worst is the Pirate Skiff in Metroid Prime 2; you only get two tries to scan it and they stay for what seems like ten seconds.

  2. My worst would probably be the Legion Soul from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. The game never tells you the correct method to getting it and it's not like with the other bosses where you can either re-battle them later on to claim their souls or they give you the souls by default.

  3. The one I think of the most when it comes to "lost forever" stuff is in Tales of Vesperia, namely Raven's "Vanji Lost" arte. If you don't see some tiny little scene which seemingly does nothing then you can never trigger the event which gets you the spell. Granted Vanji Lost can be turned into one of the most broken spells ever so it's understandable that they'd want to hide it.

    1. Never played Vesperia, but at least Symphonia had the courtesy of pulling that stuff with two useless titles (referring to Paw Mania and Paw Dandy here) instead of the complete gamebreaker.

    2. And it really is a game breaker. The spell Vanji Lost turns into is essentially the Hourglass item as a SPELL. It's little wonder they kept that thing super hidden.

  4. Metroid Prime 2 is a bit of a bastard for that in general. Between the Ing Webtrap, the Pirate Skiff, and Quadraxis, which requires the player to scan each and every part of each and every one of its forms, getting 100% scans in that game is a pretty tall order.
