Some kinds of achievements shouldn't even exist.

Those that reward mediocrity and those you get for just starting the game in particular. They're called ACHIEVEMENTS, goddangit. Of course there are cases where they can be okay, such as the one in Portal 2 where Wheatley asks you to jump down a bottomless pit, and if you do so you get an achievement as a punchline of sorts. But those are few and far between. Really, achievements should be something you work for, which is why I'm not a huge fan of those you get through the normal course of the game either (but they're not as bad as the aforementioned kinds).

  1. There's also bullshit achivements on the Xbone, and as we know the focus on the TV is major and goes even to achivements

  2. I get more annoyed with the ones that require excessive grinding well beyond what I would normally consider 100%, like the 500 rescues one in HW. I'm not going to get that even with the massive amount of DLC being released, as I'm about halfway done with the TP map (with everything else 100% completed) and I'm still only at 300. There are a bunch of others I've found as well that have prevented me from getting them all, because I'm not going to spend dozens of hours on something like that.

But worst of all are the online-only achievements. I generally don't play games online, as I'm more of a single-player guy, but on top of that, those achievements will one day be entirely inaccessible due to servers being shut down.

    1. Speaking of Hyrule Warriors it does the same thing. I mean isn't there a medal for killing 1000 enemies and it would be kinda sad if someone killed less than 700 enemies on their first run of the very first level. (I say 700 because of the great fairy kills around 300 assuming you don't kill any enemies in the northern area)

  3. ^Grinding for achievements sucks. I'm almost done getting 100% in Smash Wii U, and some of these challenges are awful. "Recover the stat boosts a Metroid stole from you in Smash Tour." I played 10 games of Smash Tour before it even showed up, and I had to use 4 controllers to stop CPU's from screwing it up. Even worse: "Destroy a total of 50000 blocks in Trophy Rush." It takes close to 5-6 hours of grinding just to get this, and Trophy Rush isn't that fun. Not to mention you don't even need to do well, you just need to play over and over again.

  4. My favorite game for achievements is TF2. You don't win anything for really stupid crap and they all have pretty good names.

  5. Many achievements exists because Microsoft requires all games on its system to have a certain number of total achievement points or something.

    1. Yeah, it's actually one of the few major reasons as to why the Monster Hunter franchise moved to Nintendo actually. Because while making an HD PS3 port of a PSP game, Capcom was too lazy to include Trophies and Sony was pissed. Considering there's already an in-game awards system, I don't it would have been that big of a deal to include though...

  6. Portal 2 also had an achievement got through normal play that was pretty good - specifically, "The Part Where He Kills You".

    1. Hell, Portal 2 as a whole was concentrated awesomeness.

  7. Ubisoft is king of easy achievements, because of those Uplay points. "Beat the game" and you have 40 Uplay points already. But Uplay is so shitty and buggy that I beat AC Brotherhood and didn't get the points for it.

  8. You weren't kidding when you wrote that Xenoblade Chronicles is the best game ever made. I just made it past that Mechonis Core segment, and any gripes that I have are really trivial and tied to artistic choices in the end. I had no idea the Wii could pull off a game this grand in scope, and I've played both Mario Galaxy games! To be fair, there are some framerate problems in battles with multiple enemies, but there is little doubt in my mind that the Wii U sequel will fix that. Ten out of ten. 99 out of 100. Best game ever made. 110 hours of my life optimally spent and counting.

Oh right, we're talking about achievements. Xenoblade is one of the very few games I've played with an achievement system. Most of the achievements are gotten just by playing the game normally, but that doesn't stop them all from making me feel special! Two thumbs up!

    1. But achievements actually give you in-game perks (read: experience). Not many games do that.
