That's not what I call Wal-Mart value.

I was reading up on Amiibos, trying to figure out what the hell they do, and... well, is it just me, or is $13 a pop a pretty big amount for what they do? Right now, we know they do:

- That Tamagotchi thing in SSB4
- Unlock extra outfits for Miis in MK8
- The Link one unlocks the Spinner for Link in Hyrule Warriors, presumably Zelda will get a similar treatment, and the others give rupees, materials and weapons (which you can find through normal gameplay anyway)

We also know they're going to be compatible with other games, like Mario Party 10 and Yoshi's Woolly World, as well as other yet-to-be-announced games. But still, that's $13 per figurine. Meaning that if you want to get your money's worth, you better have near every game that supports it, considering how uninteresting what we've seen so far sounds. Oh, and you just know some people will want to have every last one of them. Apparently the intention is for every character on the SSB4 roster to have its own Amiibo. That's 49 times $13, for a total of $637.

Yeah, I'll pass. The Spinner is the one thing I might have had an interest in, but for $13? It's not like Link has any shortage of weapons, and he's already got the Gauntlets covering the Lightning element anyway.

  1. you know I kinda wish that the Smash Ambiios would add the character for MK8, I mean even how greedy that is, it still would've been cool

  2. Considering the First DLC for Mario Kart 8 has 3 new CHARACTERS which better than a single costume in ever single way plus 8 new courses and 4 new vehicles and is 5 dollars less I can't see this doing too much better than the e-reader cards for the GBA. Hell the e-readers came in decks of about 20 cards and were still probably much less expensive than these.

    1. Absolutely agreed. Then you have Hyrule Warriors where each DLC pack adds not only weapons, but characters, Adventure maps and a bunch of costumes (mostly unlocked through said maps) as well. Yikes.

  3. I've always said that I'm mostly interested in these figurines for their collectable value. I have entire shelves of figurines and extra merchandise, and these will make a great addition to that. But yeah, for people who aren't interested in them for that reason, I can imagine that there's very little reason to get these. It's basically very minor DLC that's way overpriced for what it does.

Personally, I'm getting Mario, Link, Samus, Marth and Zelda on their release days. I may get more later depending on the uses.

  4. Yeah, I think figurine part is the reason most people are getting them, not the DLC. Too bad some of them don't really look that great.

Not sure if I'll ever be getting one, as they just scream Skylanders in terms of greediness, and as you said, the features they provide for compatible games are kinda lackluster sounding.

    1. If I'm not mistaken, Nintendo turned down a participation in Skylanders just so they could make these.

    2. I'm against the whole "action figures to progress" thought process myself. I would never waste my money on these Amiibos.

  5. Buying all the Amiibos is $637. That's as many as 63.7 tens. And that's terrible.

But personally, I'm not entirely sure what to think about the whole Amiibo thing.

  6. In Europe they are even more expensive. 15 € for each are about 18,60 $

  7. I'm interested in them from a collection standpoint. I'll probably get all my Smash Mains and maybe a few extras if I like how they look, but there's no way I'm getting them all or even half anytime soon. I'm not too surprised that they do what they do. I didn't expect anything insane. A very small part of me was hoping that maybe Mario Kart 8 would have something interesting, like content for each character, but that's unrealistic, especially since they're already releasing DLC the traditional way for that game. I'd say so far, Smash Bros is the most interesting implementation, but that makes sense seeing as that's what they're being pushed for. Hey, at least this way, you don't feel pressured to buy them for actual good content, like a huge chunk of the game. I suppose Hyrule Warriors could potentially be missing out on a lot if they do the same thing with Zelda and Ganondorf that they did with Link, but for now, that's about it.
