Mega Rayquaza confirmed

And like Primal Kyogre and Groudon, it has a new ability, Delta Stream, which is an improved Air Lock in that it actually cancels weather instead of suspending its effects, AND weather cannot be induced whenever Mega Rayquaza is on the field. It even works on Desolate Land and Primordial Sea, making it what Air Lock always should've been in the first place. I think we're all relieved that Gamefreak didn't botch this. Additionally, Delta Stream also has an extra effect: it cancels Flying-types' weaknesses. However, the wording is rather ambiguous. Does it straight-up halve the damage of types that Flying is weak to (meaning Mega Rayquaza would resist Electric, for example)? Does it halve the damage of types Flying is weak to, but only if the other type doesn't cancel the weakness (so Electric would hit for neutral damage, but so would Rock)? Or does it cancel out any weaknesses Flying-types have, including those from their other type (giving Mega Rayquaza no weakness)? Either way, this gives Rayquaza an ENORMOUS buff that will no doubt be able to allow it to come back from the obscure depths of the uber tier. And it gets a brand new move as well, Dragon Ascent, which is apparently the most powerful Flying move in the game. In layman's terms: expect a drawback of some sort. Hopefully it's one that isn't too crippling, because God knows Rayquaza needs a good Flying move.

Edit: Dragon Ascent is confirmed to be a Close Combat clone, although its actual power is up in the air. Probably the best possible choice for a drawback, because Rayquaza's really frail anyway.

  1. The way it's worded to me makes me think that Flying types would be treated as not having any weakness while the weather is in effect without affecting their other type. So in Rayquaza's case it would mean it would resist Electricity, be neutral to rock and wouldn't be as weak to Ice as before. But Mega Rayquaza would still be weak to types that are super effective against Dragon, so Ice, Dragon and Fairy.

I have a problem with Dragon Ascent really. It's clearly a Draconic move, so WHY is it being described as the most powerful flying type move? While I don't deny Rayquaza needs the flying type move, it still seems a bit odd to me. Unless it's one of those "dual type" moves like Flying Press.

    1. It's a lot like Oblivion Wing, where the name can easily suggest either type.

    2. Oh, and by the way, the Japanese name is Finishing Blow. So the translators didn't have much to work with here.

    3. The Japanese name is a metaphor for "finishing touches"; apparently it refers to an old legend where an artist painted dragons that would come to life and ascend to the heavens after he finished painting their eyes in (thus the name "Dragon Ascent").

It's mostly fluff you probably won't that interested in, but the more you know and all that.

  2. Inb4 Dragon Ascent is a hyper beam clone ruining all use it might have had.

  3. In a twist that surprised a grand total of nobody, Mega Rayquaza is confirmed.

It looks cool as hell, though.

  4. According to this it lowers Def and Sp Def after each use.

    1. So a more powerful version of Close Combat. Is Brave Bird the strongest flying-type move currently? I'm willing to bet it'll have a BP of 150, and physical, of course.

    2. Sky Attack, actually. Still, I can easily live with a Close Combat clone regardless, because Rayquaza's always been about hitting hard, and its attacking stats are the ones getting the biggest boosts. It desperately needs some more speed, though, Extremespeed or not.

  5. And now Rayquaza being stronger from a lore-standpoint is a little more accurate. We all knew how it went in Emerald:
Rayquaza: Hey, you guys should stop fighting. You're causing destruction.
G and K both: No way.
Rayquaza: Aw, come on, please? I came all the way out here. Really, you should stop.
Kyogre: I don't like your tone. *uses Ice Beam*

    1. Now, it's all:
(comes back from the dead as Mega Rayquaza)
Mega Rayquaza: (disables their weathers, causes high winds, and seals the Primal Powers in the Orbs) "GET OUT OF MY SIGHT BEFORE I SQUASH YOU TWO LIKE BUGS!"

    2. (Three days later)
Rayquaza: "HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I, THE TITAN OF THE SKIES AS ORDAINED BY ARCEUS HIMSELF, BE THE SLAVE OF A HUMAN BRAT?! At least he doesn't know the true power of...(sees Red Orb and Rayquazanite) Can you kill me now?"
Brendan: "Shut up! I have a rematch with the Elite Four, and I'm short on money!"

  6. Rayquaza with base 110 or so speed would absolutely wreck shop - it would be interesting to see if some of them run protect (like mega absol does) just so they can get the speed boost - could potentially be very cool as it has a good movepool and attacking stats, SD, DD, Espeed and now a good flying stab - extra speed is what it desperately needs to break into top tier ubers - we'll just have to wait and see if it gets enough of it!
