It's musical, but not mad or messy anymore.

I can't help but feel disappointed when seeing this preview for Super Mario Star Road DS. Remember how tough the original Mad Musical Mess was? Now there's random platforms everywhere, the near-instant-death trumpets now have air blowing out of them, and that star where you had to use the jumping block just right is, well, just another star now. (Not to mention Luigi's presence, but there's not much to be done about that.) Sure, the original version was hard as hell, but that's what made its charm. Cloudrail Station also appears to be less deadly, for what it's worth. Super Mario 64 DS was guilty of it to an extent too, but that's no reason to repeat Nintendo's mistakes.

I will say this, though: the new Band Land remix sounds freaking sweet. Can't take that away.

  1. I don't know if you follow skelux's google plus page slow, but it seems like he wants mad musical mess that way. Skelux seems to think the easier difficulty is an improvement, which I can understand to a degree but I had the same reaction when I first saw the preview.

One thing to consider is that mario 64 ds has significantly worse controls than the original counterpart so maybe it's for the best lest star road ds becomes to frustrating to play because of the controls. For what it's worth skelux is working on altering the controls as well

    1. The controls thing I can buy. Removing challenge because it's challenging is something I have much vitriol for, though.

  2. At least he nerfed Luigi's backflip. He doesn't go into that ridiculous spin anymore.
Without it, Luigi is not anywhere near as broken as he is in vanilla 64DS

  3. Skellux does just the same like Nintendo by nerfing the dificulty in the remake. Sort or ironic if you think about it.
