Guess I'm not in Bettman's target demographic

Am I the only one who's bored out of his skull when a fight breaks out during a hockey game? I mean seriously, if I wanted to see two dudes beating the shit out of each other, I'd watch boxing or MMA, and to no one's surprise I'm not a big fan of either.

  1. Naw, while it does make you in the minority, not all fans like fighting. I personally think it's kind of dumb and just disrupts the action. I can maybe kind of understand if a scuffle breaks out in the confrontation (not for it, but I understand) but pretty much just randomly deciding to throw the gloves off once you got a moment is stupid. Fortunately my team doesn't really get into too many fights (Chicago, usually it's just 1 of 2-3 players that ever get into it and it's fairly uncommon). Personally I think they should eject and 1-game suspend fighters if for no other reason than to bring the NHL into the modern era with other countries and international play (no fights are tolerated in the Olympics, for instance). However, it's not like it's that common anymore. Still there but I heard like it drops 10-20% a year. In a decade's time I wouldn't be surprised if fights were a big deal when they happened as opposed to a "well what did you expect" moment. Guessing you're a Canadiens guy?

    1. Haha, not a chance. I grew up with the Nordiques way back then.

    2. Ah, right you did say you were a good distance from Montreal. Makes sense. Guess you can't go with your biggest geographical rival. (They became the Carolina Hurricanes if not mistaken, right?) So which team do you put your attention to then?

    3. Sorry brain fart. I meant Colorado Avalanche (for some reason was thinking of other NHL teams that moved and mixed them up).

    4. I'm more of a neutral fan nowadays, though I'm not big on teams like Boston and Philadelphia who let their fists talk a bit too much.

    5. Noted. Funny you mention Philadelphia, their goalie even starts his own fights (he used to play for Chicago, and I can't recall him ever fighting in his stint with them, which is surprising since he's got a long reputation).

  2. Misread the Bettman as Batman. I proceeded to say "The title is a lie because everyone is in Batman's target demographic". As for the actually subject I'm not really that big a hockey fan. It does look interesting and fun. I might wanna try playing it one day.

    1. Bettman really should dress up as Batman the next time he presents the Conn Smythe trophy, he might not get booed quite as much.

    2. Yeah but it's like a time-honored tradition to boo the commissioner or governor or similar person-in-power who is not quite important enough to respect, especially when lacking in popularity or competence.

  3. Not a huge fan of fights either, it's so sloppy compared to boxing I can't get in to it.

    Side note: Selig>Goodell=Stern>Bettman
    I hate him so much

  4. I started watching the KHL this year (that Russian league), and I can say I've become more of a KHL fan than an NHL fan at this point. Went in with no team, already threw all my support behind Medvescak Zagreb, with a couple soft spots for other teams (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, Salavat Yulaev Ufa, Avangard Omsk)

It's way more finesse based. More flashy moves, less goonery, unless your name is Artyukhin. Some very underrated talent there, mostly just guys that didn't hack it here like Brandon Bochenski, Jan Mursak, and Mikko Koskinen. There's also some good guys who just stayed, guys like Sergei Mozyakin, Vasily Koshechkin, Konstantin Barulin...

It's an enjoyable time if you get the chance to watch a game - I got a pal who's a Blues fan who I got into the league. I picked a team for him and he's ordering a Michael Garnett Traktor Chelyabinsk jersey next week. (Lucky bastard. I want an Avangard jersey, dammit, but I don't have the money right now)
