The most worthless sparkles of all time

Yes, even worse than Twilight.

So I just found my first shiny in Y today. Unfortunately... it's... A MALE COMBEE. Feel free to laugh at my misfortune.

  1. Hey, at least it's better than a regular Combee.

  2. Well, mine was a shiny Noctowl in Pokemon Village. This was before shinies were know to be super common and I wasn't sure if it could learn whirlwind so I used a master ball because I knew that there was no real roamers in Y. Guess what move it didn't have...
Though the other day I was worried I'd get a shiny male Combee while looking for a female one in a friend zone due to how uncommon female Combee are.

    1. Here's a trick for easy female Combees: plant yellow berries, let 'em grow, and eventually bugs will attack them. Since the species depends on the color of the berry, yellow berries will always yield Combees. Now the amazing part is that just like in DPP, you can soft reset until you get a female one. So you can just do that.

    2. Doesn't it take about a day to do that anyways? Besides I have a Vespiquen already. (still took about half an hour though...)

    3. It's quicker if you use Aspear berries.

  3. It's funny, my friends and I joke that a male Combee really is the worst shiny you could possibly get... At least you can use it for Sweet Scent?

  4. Slowpoke was my first in Y. I also found a shiny Wingull in a Horde...

  5. I got a shiny Modest Tyrogue in my X. I'd say you have it worse though, as at least a noob would use a Hitmon- with a bad nature.

  6. They changed how shinyness is determind in x and y instead of being determined by your ID, SID, and pokemon's PID its determind by your shiny value (a number between 0-4096 that is fixed like you ID) when a pokemon is generated (wild, hatched, etc) on your game it is also given a shiny value and if It matches up the pokemon is shiny (which can be used to hatch pokemon shiny guaranteed more info google search gamefaqs shiny value database) their is a program calledd instachecker that works like pokecheck but for x and y (google search smogon instacheck) and because of that the odds of fining a shiny in x and y are indeed higher (1/4096 because that is the total number of possible values

  7. I really wanted my first shiny to be a chandelure since its my favorite, so I bred for the best possible stats. Makes a good team member now. Later ran into a shiny octillary in the safari while looking for floatzel to breed azumarills, and while training that azumarill, got a shiny gulpin. Lucking out big time so far

  8. Slowflake, since you're so stingy, I guess we can rule out that rumor that tipping NPCs raises the shiny rate.

What DOES tipping do, anyway? Is it just there for the game designers to laugh at you when you think you're going to get some reward for blowing away your money?

    1. There's an achievement for it, and that's it.

However... why could we rule that out? If I don't tip and tipping increases the shiny rate, then I'm stuck at the base ratio.

    2. True. Serebii just updated with confirmation that the 1-4096 rate is real. Still, even though the rate increased by 50%, you'd think 1 in 4096 would still be an agonizingly rare occurence. There are some people who never found the Sword of Kings in EarthBound and even that's only 1 in 128 from grinding in one specific area.

    3. I mean 100%, not 50. The rate doubled. Well, what I meant was, shinyness increased by 100%, but non-shinyness decreased by 50%, effectively cut to half. I need better math skillz and an edit button.

  9. I found a shiny Psyduck a while back when I was trying to hatch an egg and accidentally stepped in some grass and today I found a shiny Horsea when I was trying to do the chain fishing.

  10. Ouch, I was wondering if you had found a shiny yet. I have never seen a wild shiny in my life before Pokemon Y (I was so jealous of your Emerald playthrough) but I have found no less than FOUR shinies in pokemon Y. I thought my shiny magikarp was pretty bad (It was modest with 0 Attack IVs as well) but shiny male combee takes the grand prize. Well odds are you will probably find another with the boosted rate

  12. My first shiny and only I caught/encountered (excluding the chain fishing thing) was a drought Ninetales from the friend safari (serious nature). I then traded it for a4 IV EV trained shiny skarmory with spikes, whirlwind, brave bird, roost and an Impish nature. Could have chose a Modest Gardivoir instead, but I needed a physical wall.

Slow, have you chain fished for any shinies yet?
