Poll: Favorite starter trio

Straightforward question. Go!

As far as I'm concerned, it's 4 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 5 all the way. 3 and 4 are all-around very solid, but I'd give 4 a slight edge here. 1 is decent, though mostly carried by Venusaur, and Feraligatr is 2's lone saving grace. As far as gen 5 goes... well, the horse has been dead for a long time. Hopefully Gamefreak gets a clue and makes the gen 6 starters good.

  1. As much as I dislike Infernape for stealing Blaziken's glory, 4 wins this one for me on the basis of strong and interesting secondary typings.

  2. 4 and 3 are pretty much tied as well. Then 2 because I like Feral and Typlo. 1 Cause of Blast and Vena then 5 were I only like Samo and barely at that. Dewott is one of my favs for some stupid reason. I don't know why I just like him.

    1. I think Dewott is the best looking out of all the gen 5 starter lines, personally. I can't imagine how they botched up its evolution so bad.

  3. Like most people I pretty much have 3 and 4 tied. While I acknowledge 4 is slightly better all around, I gave my vote to 3 simply because the Sceptile line is my favorite starter line, and Grovyle is my favorite Pokemon period.

  4. I guess my opinion is pretty popular. Same order as Slow, with 3 and 4 being SO close to tied. I give 4 the edge because it's extremely well-rounded, though I like Blaziken a lot more than Infernape.

  5. Not that I'm a genwunner, but I have to go for the original trio. Because Blastoise man. Turtle with water cannons in his shell. Awwwwwww yeah.

    1. Besides the look (which Forretress kind of does as well), what has Blastoise got that other Waters cannot do better?...

    2. It's really just personal preference. Squirtle was my first Pokémon, and I've always liked his design. I'm under no illusions, I know he's far from the best mon out there, but I still love the guy.

  6. I went with Gen 3 because Swampert is there and it's my favourite Pokémon. The others aren't that bad either. My order for favourite set of starters would be the same as Slow's except that Gen 3 and 4 are switched.

  7. Blaziken is my favorite starter, and the other two are not too shabby, so I will go with Gen 3. Gen 4 is in second. The rest are in the order Slow put them in...

At least you can replace Serperior with Roserade in B/W 2...

  8. Everyone wants to choose the Fire starter in Gen 6, including me. Hey, foxes may not be as cool as wolves, but they are still cool. Hopefully, it and its friends evolve into stuff that DO NOT SUCK THIS TIME!...

    1. I like Froakie the best for some reason so I'm different. I really hope the starters are like Gen 4 not only with looks but original typings for final forms (besides Infernape).

    2. Maybe they will do that Fighting/Psychic/Dark sub-typing thing that everyone wants. You know, with the Fire NOT being the Fighting. Blaziken did well enough. Infernape improved on the concept. Blaziken got Speed Boost to improve itself (good thing Blaziken is my favorite of all Starters so far). Emboar sucks. Maybe the Water starter WILL evolve into something that looks bada** while playing better than Samurott...

  9. Like most of the people here, it's a toss-up for me between gens 3 and 4. Gen 4 Definitely has the more interesting dual-typings, but my vote goes to 3 because Blaziken is one glorious mofo!

  10. As a side note, consider the starters competitively:

    Venusaur OU
    Charizard NU
    Blastoise UU

    Meganium NU
    Typhlosion RU
    Feraligatr RU

    Sceptile RU
    Blaziken Uber
    Swampert UU

    Torterra NU
    Infernape OU
    Empoleon UU

    Serperior NU
    Emboar RU
    Samurott NU

Gen 2 has 2 RUs and an NU while gen 5 has 2 NUs and an RU. Even in terms of usage, Typhlosion and Feraligatr are both high above Emboar in RU, so there's no contest in that regard. Gen 2 clearly beats gen 5. Now comes the tricky part...

Gens 1 and 4 both have an OU, a UU, and an NU. Of those, however, Infernape has higher usage than Venusaur in OU, Blastoise is higher than Empoleon in UU, and Charizard is higher than Torterra in NU. Gen 1's starters therefore claim 2 victories to gen 4's 1 in terms of usage. However, this is subjective to scaling--if you put more weight into a pokemon's standing in the higher tiers, then Infernape's higher rank compared to Venusaur would mean that gen 4 beats out gen 1 in terms of usage. If you consider performance in each tier to be equally valid, then gen 1 barely beats out gen 4. It's honestly a toss-up--I rank gen 4 above gen 1 purely out of personal preference.

As for gen 3, as we know, it's the only one that has an uber starter in it. As for the UU and RU-dwellers, though, Sceptile far outranks all of its fellow RU-dwelling starters in the usage stats, while Swampert ranks higher than Empoleon but below Blastoise in UU. There's really no question, though. Gen 3 is the only set of starters to have an uber in it. It's also the only one not to have an NU pokemon in it, so it has the highest minimum standing as well. With the highest minimum and highest maximum, gen 3's starters are easily above the rest.

The order therefore goes 3>4/1 (either order)>2>5 for the starters in terms of sheer effectiveness in a competitive setting. There are obviously other factors. I just found this interesting.

  11. I'm definitely going with Gen III's trio. Although I also love the Gen I trio, I still prefer the III trio because I think they have better designs. And the reason I didn't go with Gen IV's trio is because although I've always liked Torterra, I've never been fond of Infernape and Empoleon.

    My order would go 3>1>4>2>5.

  12. I like how Gen 5's starters currently have no votes. At least your regulars know that they suck...

  13. I really do like the 5th gen starter trio in terms of design, I just wish they played better.
