Poll change: Kanto starters

Previous poll was about gender choice in games, and a slight majority (157 out of 282) always pick their own gender, vs. 8 who always pick the opposite. The rest is more flexible: 70 pick their gender depending on their mood, whereas 47 make their choice depending on other factors, like voice acting or gameplay changes or such.

And for this next poll, we go all the way back to the late 90s! We know there are the "cool kids" who prefer Charizard, and the people who use Blastoise to beat the "cool kids"... but how many of us are enlightened and know the timeless, unchanging, eternal truth of Venusaur's dominance?

  1. I love all the Kanto starters, kind of annoyed that wasn't an option!

But I did choose Charizard, even though it's the "uncool" and uncompetitive choice. I just think the aesthetic of Charizard fits the classic look of a fierce western Dragon more than any following Pokémon bar Salamence and for that reason I like him.

Obviously I'd never use him outside of a run of FireRed or RBY where I'm looking for a challenge. lol

  2. I know venusaur is the best choice, but I really like blastoise. It has a very nostalgic feel to mean for some reason. But if it were any other water starter vs the originals, venusaur all the way.

  3. Blastoise all the way. He was my first Pokémon, so he has that nostalgic factor, and he has fucking cannons in his back. That is badass. I do recognise that Venusaur is better, but when I replay Blue/Leaf Green, I pick Squirtle every time.

  4. Even if Venesaur is the more useful both competitively and in game in most regards, I still have a very soft spot in my heart for Blastoise, I always thought it looked cooler than Charizard, and I could always beat those that opposed me, lol. It was the first pokemon I got to level 100 in the original blue, and I'll remember that great moment!

  5. Definitely Venusaur. I don't know why, but I've never really liked Charizard, though I don't mind Blastoise. Venusaur looks so badass and it was brilliant back in Gen I due to Razor Leaf being a certain critical hit and the Toxic + Leech Seed combo. So yeah, Venusaur.

  6. Even though Charizard is the worst, I do like it more. Not because it looks cool or is better. Those go to Blastoise and Venusaur respectively. There's just something to Charizard that draws me to it.

  7. It looks like there,s no Zadtards here. That,s good. I choose Blastoise becuase i like it the most. I have always liked water pokemon and especially the starters.

    1. I know, right? I know which crowd I appeal to, and it's not the Zardtards. You won't see that kind of poll results anywhere else!

  8. I know Venusaur is obviously the best of the bunch, but Blastoise has always been my favorite. In fact, the water starter is my favorite in all generations except RSE, because that honor goes to Blaziken.

  9. So awesome to see Charizard in last place!

I must confess, though, the next time I replay Red (yes, I'm actually going to do that for some reason), I'm planning on running a novelty Zard with Fire Spin/Toxic along with Flamethrower and Fly. Shame I'm missing out on EQ/Rock Slide and Swords Dance, but hey.

To completely change the subject, something about Blastoise that I thought was unbelievably vacuous, was, well, I don't know if anyone remembers Versus Books' guides, but at one point, there was an article at the back of the RBY guide that said almost verbatim, "we all agree that Squirtle is the best starter." EXCUSE ME?! Yeah, so I get that this was back back in '98 when Pokémon was new and everyone was even more ignorant than they are now, but COME. THE FUCK. ON. Even Charizard was better than the egregious RBY Blastoise!

    1. And this is why paper guidebooks are absolutely terrible.

  10. I'll be honest. When I play Red/Blue, even in my LP of Blue, I chose Charizard, because it makes a challenge in the early part of the game. But, I, at least, didn't give it a Zardtard moveset. I think I gave it Flamethrower, Earthquake, Swords Dance, and Slash if I remember.

  11. I voted Venusaur, because while I generally picked Blastoise because I knew a bunch of morons were picking Charizard, the first one I ever picked the first time I played my copy of Blue was Bulbasaur.
