Global warming, a myth? Seriously?

So I was talking with my mother about the weather, and it dawned on me that winters are much less harsh than they used to be when I was a kid, and my parents tell me it was still warmer then than when they were kids. Summers aren't that different, to be fair, but it's impossible to deny that winters are getting warmer and warmer every year. So far this winter, I can't recall a day where the temperature was below -10 Celsius (that'd be 14 Fahrenheit for the Americans among you), whereas not so long ago we'd be blessed with a lucky break whenever we had a day in the single digit negatives. It's February 9, and neither my parents nor I plugged our cars to keep the engine warm even once thus far, but even just a few years ago it was part of our daily routine.

And after that, conservative politicians and oil lobbies finance botched studies to tell us there's nothing to worry about, we can keep on burning that petroleum without consequence. As I said, it's not apparent all year round, and as such it might not be apparent everywhere for that matter, but I feel my intelligence is genuinely insulted whenever anyone suggests global warming is a myth. If you lived where I live, you'd know that's a lie.

  1. I thought that was an issue of 2002-2003, not today. The idea that global warming is a myth is laughable today, and I've heard nobody reject the reality in years. It's not as if we don't have a libraries' worth of evidence and data now.

The reason for it is exactly as you stated: Oil companies trying to stay in business and the politicians they pay off to support them. It's infuriating, especially if you support alternative energy forms.

    1. I've actually seen columns in newspapers dismissing studies supporting global warming as botched, if not outright falsified. And this is in Quebec, a haven for clean energy where social conservatism is nonexistent.

  2. It's kinda weird that in the UK and Europe (Mainly Europe) that temperatures have hit up to -30C in late Jan. (Mostly Eastern Europe with countries such as Ukraine). I've never heard of that kind of temperature over here, ever.

    1. Yeah, I've heard about that cold spell. That kind of thing is usually a freak accident though, and would occur regardless of generalized warming.

    2. Actually, though I'm not that well versed in meteorology, the planet warming up does more than just raise the overall temperature. It can create some unusual and extreme conditions. For instance in Texas last year or the year before, they had some rare snow that was a result of the global temperatures rising.

It's why I stopped using the term 'global warming', because there are alot of idiots out there who can't fully grasp the situation, and see some of the drops in temperature in some places as evidence that it's all a myth. I've had to start using the term 'climate change' around these people.
