Please use Pikachu... pleeeeeease...

You want to know what depths Nintendo will sink to to try and get people to use their useless mascot?

So there's going to be a Battle Competition that allows only Electric-types, except legendaries of course. (So for all zero of you who were ever looking for an excuse to use Stunfisk, here you go.) And it seems like they're actively bribing participants into using Pikachu. If it's one of the three most used Pokémon, there'll be a Pikachu distribution where it knows Endeavor, a move it doesn't get, even through previous events. Yes, because Endeavor Pikachu is SO GOOD. Then again, it just may have all the moves it needs anyway, considering next to nobody uses Icicle Crash, which was thought to be a must before ORAS actually came out. If it's out of the top three, but in the top 12, we get a Light Ball, and if it's out of the top 12, we get 1000 PokéMiles.

Pikachu ranks so low in the Electric-type pecking order, I wouldn't even be surprised if we ended up getting the PokéMiles. I'm banking on people actually wanting to win, and usually that and using Pikachu are mutually exclusive.

    1. People still remember quotes of mine from five years ago. I don't know whether I should be flattered or freaked out.

    2. I remember a lot of random stuff. Remember how there was that guy in the Goldenrod tunnel who sold stuff for cheap on Monday mornings? But you'd always work Monday mornings so you never talked to him. And then there was a holiday or something one time so you managed to buy the stuff from him.

  2. ... I was someone who was looking for an excuse to use Stunfisk...
Probably won't participate in that tournament though. I don't really have time to prepare a new team from scratch.

  3. Double Battle. Couldn't care less about the tournament. And yeeeah, physical Pikachu really didn't take off. Even there, they said Cosplay Pikachu DIDN'T count towards the usage...
Pokemon they could use that are better than Pikachu: Jolteon, Eelektross, Raichu, Pikachu's evolution that's faster and could maybe survive a weak Quick Attack, Magnezone, Electivire...maaaaybe Pachirisu if they want to fail at emulating the guy who pulled off an epic victory...Even Electrode. Hell, since it's doubles, I bet a few will even try using Plusle and Minun. I'm probably missing a few, but I don't care...

    1. Actually, physical Pikachu is the norm. It's just too busy using Volt Tackle, Knock Off and subpunch to care about Icicle Crash. And since the latter appears in the stats, I'm going to assume you misinterpreted something.

Also, Ampharos and regular Manectric get Plus and Minus as well, so there goes any reason to use Plusle and Minun. With that said, Pachirisu could be an interesting choice if people want to use redirection. But I think secondary typings will rule supreme and dictate everything (especially Stunfisk's Ground), because Electric attacks are nigh worthless here.

    2. More so that nothing shows up on the standard page for Pikachu's sets, and I didn't even bother looking at the stats. I was going by Gen 5, when Pikachu DID go special. because pretty much every Electric type can do what it does better because they can actually take a weak hit or two...
Well, not everyone will know that, so there will be at least one or two Plusles and Minuns in the Junior Cup, at least. Since I don't participate in tourneys that aren't Single or Rotation, I don't tend to memorize stuff that would do well for me in Doubles...

    3. An issue I see with Pachirisu as re-direction is that it wouldn't be able to put it's ability to good use. Sure it gets Volt Absorb, but when it's in a tournament where only electric type pokemon are allowed, do you REALLY think they would be using Thunderbolt and such?

    4. Even Emolga has Motor Drive, so I doubt many Electric moves will be thrown. Except by a Mega Amoharos to said Emolga, though it would sooner throw Power Gem...

    5. Yeah volt absorb's a moot point. No reason to use electric moves (except maybe volt switch could have a purpose?) and now the type is immune to paralysis so no T-Wave. Just go with any half-way interesting abilities. So I guess the top 'mons would be Stunfisk, some Rotom form (probably grass or fire for high STAB and levitate), possibly Magnezone, Electivire (can learn earthquake), Ampharos-M for power (with additional STAB), Manectric I don't think would be common, maybe Galvantula and Heliolisk (dual type that can use their STAB), Eelektross (to get around ground attacks including Hidden Power). Pachirisu might have a purpose too though Nuzzle being useless will cut its use and other Super Fang users exist. (Hell from looks of it, Dedenne would be more useful...a scary thought).

  4. Even if it's lackluster or bad, I still like Pikachu. I would have tried to compete in this, but I don't know where my copy of Pokemon Y is, and even if I did, my signature Pikachu, named after Lightning from FFXIII, has become a Raichu. But I would have tried my very best to make sure I get to the top 3 or even on the very top with a Pikachu.

    1. Actually, it's about how many people use a Pikachu, not how high up in the tournament a Pikachu-user goes. So you could even outright win the entire event with a Pikachu on your team and it wouldn't mean a darn thing if nobody else used one.
I don't personally hate Pikachu either to be honest, but this is a terrible environment to force its usage. It has NOTHING to cover other Electric types. (Except maybe Hidden Power Ground, but who in their right mind would attempt to breed for that in-game?)

  5. Is it wrong that, of those prizes, the 1000 Poke Miles looks like the best choice to me? I mean, damn, that's 1000 Poke Miles! That's a pretty good reward.

Anyway, as a former Electric Gym Leader for a few various tournament groups, I can pretty much guess what we're going to see a lot of. But it's easier to list what we won't see - Zebstrika (pretty much 100% inferior to Electivire in this context, and if anyone actually wanted speed they'd run Electrode, Jolteon, and Raichu), Minun, Pachirisu (you'll see a use or two of it from people trying to go like that one WC, but the targets are different here and it's pretty much useless), and any prevo that isn't Magneton and MAYBE Pikachu (I don't think too many people will use it, but it does have a unique niche in terms of pure power). Everything else? I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Plusle, Dedenne, Luxray, Emolga, Electrode, or any of the Rotom forms here, and neither should you.

    1. You are not crazy. Since that equals 2 PP Ups on the Pokemileage Store, I think it's a worthwhile award...

  6. I think you overestimate the primary demographic. I'm sure most people who do these competitions aren't into competitive battling at all.
