Please tell me this doesn't mean what I think it means.

Look at this picture. To the left is the world map for Super Mystery Dungeon, and to the right is the world map for MD1. Could this be not a brand new game, but a remake of MD1? If I remember correctly, it took a bit of time for them to make it clear that Explorers of the Sky was an enhanced version of Time/Darkness as opposed to a sequel. Fingers crossed that it's just a coincidence and nothing else. But the name "Super Mystery Dungeon" kinda looks suspicious now with that knowledge in mind.

That said, I wouldn't say all is lost if it IS a remake. So if that's what happens, at least I hope they keep some of the improvements MD2 brought, like more bag space, no Friend Areas and the ability to recruit Pokémon even when you have a full party. Though I wouldn't say no to the infinite inventory space MD1 had, either.

  1. That's only a portion of the map though. There's a whole other continent just as big to the west. Plus, I'll have to look again, but that town didn't look like Pokemon Square at all to me, except having a Lombre NPC. I think it's more likely that it just takes place in the same world.

One thing I'm looking forward to though that I just realized the other day is playing a proper mystery dungeon game with Gates to Infinity's EXP system. I don't know if you're aware (probably not because let's be honest, we probably all stopped paying attention once the game started to sound horrible), but experience in that game is shared between all members, active or inactive. So basically, you grind one team member, you grind all. I really hope this game turns out good.

    1. I'm going to play devil's advocate and suggest that it's extra post-game content because let's be frank, MD1 didn't have anywhere near the amount of dungeons 2 and 3 did.

  2. From what I've seem, the Lapras in the image is moving to the right, meaning it came from the left. This does kinds imply that the main base is to the left of this land. That does weaken the theory that it's a remake. I can also notice that the land masses in the bottom right don't quite match with each other.

However, this DOES provide another possibility, that Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a distant sequel/prequel to the first Pokemon Mystery Diungeon.

  3. Well, Gen 6 was the generation of catering to Gen 1 and 3 fans after all, so it could be merely a nod to the original map or a sequel/prequel like Looneyman is guessing.

    1. Oh my god, I just realized. The Delta Episode ends with Rayquaza destroying a meteor. MD1's main story ends with Rayquaza destroying a meteor.

      FUCK.

    2. I don't think Game Freak had much to do with the SL of PMD1. They provided the movepools of the pokemon for sure, but I don't know how much involvement they had in the game. So that may be a co-incidence.

    3. True, but the Delta Episode may well be a callback to MD1 regardless of who made it.

Regardless, best thing that could happen is that it's a new game with some of the old dungeons. Some of that music (Great Canyon, Mt. Freeze, Sky Tower, etc.) was magic, it'd be amazing to hear some of those pieces updated on the 3DS.

    4. I think the Delta Episode is more of a reference to the Deoxys movie honestly.

    5. I'd love to hear a 3DS remix of Great Canyon myself. IMO it's better than any of the songs in RSE.

  4. I may sound crazy saying this but what if it's what certain fans want to happen in the main series and they make it so every place in the PMD series is accessible they did say something to the effect of that this will be the definitive game in the direct.

    1. That new part sure as hell isn't the MD2 map, though.

    2. Hopefully they didn't mean that this would the 'definitive' version of one of the previous games. You all have me paranoid now

  5. Well I didn't say it had to be exclusively places from past games. Also it looks almost like a fusion between the land with the level one dungeons in rescue team and Southeastern Archipelago in explorers it could be their way of making sense of and combining two COMPLETELY different maps still seems like a stretch even to me.

  6. I dunno. If there wasn't an online client for the TCG, I'd probably make a video game with the updated mechanics of that. And that's why I don't work at Game Freak (that and I'm too young)...

  7. Could be a remake, could be a sequel... It's far too early to say anything for now.

  8. Box art has been revealed, and seeing as it's not even remotely similar to MD1, I'm tentatively saying this won't be a remake at all.

    1. Official site has revealed that the plot revolves around Pokémon turning to stone, so yeah, I'm now 100% positive this game is original. http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ex/cho_dungeon/game/story/150615_01.html
