Lucas confirmed for SSB4 DLC... how will that work?

Honest question here. I figured with PK Freeze as a custom move for Ness, there really was no point in keeping Lucas around, but there we go. Is he just going to have both moves swapped in his move list or something?

Oh, by the way, four dollars for Mewtwo if you haven't registered both versions. That's... a bit on the high side, considering he's basically 2% of the roster. Will you go for it or not? I... honestly have no idea if I will. First I need to get my gamepad repaired, so that'll leave me with ample time to think about it.

And then there's a write-in ballot thing where you can petition for other characters that may or may not be considered. In other words: Goku and Hatsune Miku confirmed!

  1. Any Touhou character would be broken, and Hades would be difficult. I opted for Reyn...

    1. Sharla would've been interesting, if only because I would've loved to see the gymnastics necessary to fit a dedicated healer in Smash. Or hell, see if Seven being a playable character would cross a line her being a trophy and a Smash Tour item didn't.

But yeah, Reyn would've been a good choice, especially with Riki and Dunban clearly out of the running.

    2. Touhou isn't even on a Nintendo platform, anyway.

There are those Touhou games coming for Vita, or PS4, or something, though. Reimu confirmed for (the currently nonexistent) Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale 2.

  2. I cast my vote for Mokka from Magical Starsign. Obscure? Yes, but there were three trophies for that game in Brawl, so they at least remember it exists. I want to see how an Earth-elemental magic user would work in Smash Bros.

  3. I'm super glad to see Lucas coming back! He was one of my mains in Brawl, much like Ness in Smash 4. Lucas and Ness have similar specials, but that's really where most of the similarities end. Just look at the rest of their attacks to see what I mean. Lucas is definitely not a clone of Ness.

I voted for Ridley because of course.

  4. There's a lot of call for Shovel Knight to be in Smash. I think he'd be a good character

  5. So that leaves... Wolf, Ice Climbers, Roy and Pichu that are the only non-returning veterans? I wonder if we'll get any of them too. Gotta say that Lucas is my favorite of the bunch, as I found him significantly easier to use and perhaps more powerful than Ness (plus I like the character more, a lot less of a blank slate). I would also like Wolf, at least, as I thought he was more interesting to play than Fox and Falco. Never cared for the Ice Climbers, Roy is too similar to Marth (and we already have a Marth clone), and Pichu can just fuck off.

Spending an extra $40 on SSB3DS for $4 savings? Hell yeah! I guess you could also count the game itself, but besides Smash Run and portability, it became completely obsolete once the Wii U version launched. In retrospect, I really wish they just devoted all their resources into one game.

    1. Clearly you are forgetting Young Link, there's no way they can overlook an opportunity to put him back in the game. In all seriousness, I would be interested in him returning if they changed him to be more like Majora's Mask Young Link. Having him transform into Deku, Goron, and Zora forms kinda like how Pokemon Trainer did in brawl. But I guess they don't want any alternate forms for characters anymore, what with Zelda and Sheik being separate characters now

    2. Same for Samus and ZSS. And Ivysaur and Squirtle getting the axe. I hear this has something to do with the 3DS' technical limitations, though let's be honest, how many people used both Zelda AND Sheik?

  6. I'm not sure if Goku will make it into the cut, unless they decide to include non-video game characters into the mix.

    1. The ballot page specifically asks for video game characters. So I think we're safe.

    2. Both Goku and Miku have been in video games. So we're screwed...

    3. But they are not video game characters. They're a manga character and computer program respectively.

    4. The point is that they were in video games, so their place of origin will not be enough to stop people for petitioning for them...

    5. It won't stop them voting, but they won't implement them.

    6. We'll see. They are less likely than the Touhou characters, and those are out because they'd be way too broken...

    7. Acutally Sakurai had a policy concerning 3rd party characters saying
1.They must have had one game on a Nintendo console
2.They must have originiated as a video game character
So we're safe from, not crazy choices, but at least non-video game characters (unless the horrible day arrives when Ash fangirls vote him in).

  7. PK Freeze isn't what makes Lucas Lucas. His A moves and his tether grab are completely different from Ness, in both animations and properties. The only one they share is the forward smash. They're basically Mario & Luigi.

    1. That may be, but I'd always figured PK Freeze as a custom move was the reason why they didn't bother bringing Lucas back.

    2. I think the reason they didn't bring Lucas back at first was because they had just re-released Earthbound so they thought that Ness would be a lot more popular and saw no reason to bring Lucas back. Then the outcry happened.

  8. Voted for Isaac from Golden Sun. Not that he'll actually get in, of course. People seem dead set on begging Nintendo to be lazy and just port an old character instead of giving them a chance to see what new stuff they could come up with by creating an entirely new character. I honestly would be very happy and satisfied with the outcome of the ballot as long as we get a newcomer...

    1. So basically, we'll be getting either Snake or Roy, probably?...

    2. If we judge by the most popular comments on social media, yes. Also, you forgot Wolf, which is the veteran I'd be the less upset to see come back... but I'd still be extremely disappointed in the wasted potential.
Lastly, I don't want jinx it, but... the one-website-which-shall-not-be-named will totally raid the poll just like they did with the Befriend a Pokémon context back in Pokémon Black and White.

    3. Did they explicitly say the one with the most votes was going to win?

      Delete
    4. No. It says that voting will let the devs consider the character being added. Nothing about number of votes.

    5. Good. They at least gave themselves the opportunity to avoid invasions and stuff like that.

Anyway, no way we're getting Roy. Not only do we already have a Roy on the roster, but we already have Lucina, who can be summed up as "Roy except better".

  9. Well, I know that at least they aren't going to just give Ness' customs to Lucas. His PK Freeze moves much faster and lower in the trailer than is possible with Ness' version, and they actually have the sideways-on-impact flame for Lucas' PK Fire.

Hopefully this means he won't suck dick, because Ness' customs are TERRIBLE.

  10. I voted for Ray 01, because Custom Robo was awesome.

  11. I figure they'll give Lucas new special custom moves, or base them on Ness'

For example, Ness' neutral customs are high rising PK Flash & PK Freeze. So give Lucas high rising PK Freeze and PK Flash.
If they didn't want to bring in the VA to record 1 new line, they can just call it "Explosive PK Freeze"

The other special moves are much more friendly to just swapping around (though maybe with some small fixes like Vacuuming PSI Magnet still has him put it in front of him).

  12. Hilariously, Mewtwo doesnt have any custom specials whatsoever, so chances are Lucas and future DLC wont either, barring future updates
