Pre-holiday grab bag

- Ubisoft's reputation has been in dire straits lately, and I'm being nice with this wording. Assassin's Creed Unity's glitchiness truly befits a game released on November 11, 2014, and a new chapter of the saga of ultimate ridicule was written with the game's fourth patch clocking in at a monstrous 6.7 GB. No, that's not a typo. SIX POINT SEVEN GIGABYTES. Hey, remember Super Mario Bros. 3? A game many people consider to be among the best ever to this day? This patch, this single, solitary patch, is 18000 times the size of SMB3.

- But wait, it gets worse. How can Ubisoft get Assassin's Creed right if they can't even get... TETRIS right? That's right. This game came out 25 years ago on the Game Boy. And they can't even get it right. They can't even put A GAME BOY GAME on the PS4 and have it function decently. And here I thought nothing was ever going to top Sonic Genesis in terms of bad ports/remakes.

- The VGC rules for 2015 have been revealed. Unsurprisingly, there's no arbitrary Pokédex restriction anymore, the Soul Dew is still banned, but a big question mark was whether Deoxys would be allowed considering it lost its event legendary status. The answer to that turned out to be no. Since I don't have any knowledge of doubles, I have no idea whether Deoxys would've been useful to start with. Something tells me the offensive forms would get shredded pretty easily, but the Leaf Green and Emerald ones could have some use for dual screening and stuff. How far off am I?

- One kind of people I hate is those godforsaken Japan worshippers who think you're stupid if you don't speak a lick of Japanese. I saw a YouTube video where the guys doing it had to say a Japanese username on a constant basis, pronounced it the same way I would've, and of course some commenters saw fit to insult them just because they don't master the subtleties of a language that's only spoken on an island at the other end of the world. Of course the "stupid American" insult came into play, despite Nova Scotia not being part of the United States last I checked, and not speaking a certain language doesn't instantly make one stupid. Not even English. Heck, even for an English speaker there are tons of languages that are much more appropriate as second languages than Japanese, most notably Spanish, German or French. So if you want to tell me I'm a drooling fucktard because I don't know any Japanese, I hope you break a few bones when your high horse gets sick of you, throws you off and stomps all over you.

  1. Speaking of Sonic there's a romhack of the first game that does a better job at tetris than the ps4 version: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2198/

    1. Students in high school could probably do better at making a Tetris game if it's on the level of Sonic Genesis...

  2. Ubisoft... Ubisoft... Ubisoft... how deep a hole are you digging yourselves into right now? We're going to need to import the nautical league measurements to measure how deep the hole is.

    1. Oh, please. Forget nautical measurements! At this rate, we'll soon need to import astronomical measurements. It won't matter, though, because it's transforming into a spatial black hole. I also thought nothing would top S.G. in the "bad porting" department. They've almost made the exact same horrible decisions as SEGA(*SEGA*, for crying out loud!).

  3. Speaking of Japanese, it's interesting how much you can learn just by watching subbed anime. I've picked up many words and pretty much have the pronunciation quirks down without picking up a single book or made any attempt at learning the language at all. The most interesting thing, though, is how many English words are incorporated into speech. It's kind of like how we use certain phrases in their native languages (like deja vu, forgive the lack of accents), but you'll hear English in practically every other sentence if you're paying attention.

Now, I'm an ignorant American whose only experience with a language other than than English (besides that little bit of Japanese) is a couple of semesters of French. As a native French speaker, Slow, is that a phenomenon with your first language as well? English is pretty much the most widely-spoken language in the world now, with most first-world countries having it at least as a primary second-language. I'm just wondering how much of that sneaks over into other languages when so many people speak their native language as well as English.

    1. Yeah, with the first paragraph, it's really apparently in east asian languages, i'm learning Korean and there's tons of just borrowed English words, and the Korean alphabet Hangul has about 25 letter I believe

  4. I fucking, fucking hate Japanese purists. French has always been my second language (I'm half French myself) and you're right, these aforementioned languages are much easier to learn.

Not watching anime was the greatest decision I have ever made.

    1. I wasn't talking about ease of learning as much as I was talking about usefulness. Speaking Japanese just isn't as useful as the more common European languages.

    2. I stand by both cases then. The end result is still the same, Japanese purists suck.

Also, guess what snake is getting its Hidden Ability now?...

  6. Deoxys-D would have likely seen some niche play but, judging from the BW VGC meta, it would have been largely outclassed by Cresselia.

Deoxys-S probably wouldn't have fared much better. Meowstic-M does pretty much everything it can but with priority.

    1. I see. What about Deoxys-FR? Am I totally off the mark, or does the nature of doubles essentially make it a free kill for the opponent?

    2. Yeah, Fake Out pretty much destroys it - and in the case of Mega Kangaskhan, completely kills it.

      252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Fake Out vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Deoxys-A: 150-177 (119 - 140.4%)

And then, of course, there's Sucker Punch...
      0- Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Sucker Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Deoxys-A: 150-177 (95.5 - 112.7%)
