The most expensive DLC of all time

For me, getting two versions of what's essentially the same game has always been a no-no. It's true for Pokémon, it sure as all hell is true for Sonic, and it's true for Smash as well. So from that point of view, in order to have one extra character in my game, I'd have to shell out $45. NO THANKS. Not even Mewtwo is gonna sell me on this. I have so many better things to do with $45. Food, the rent, electricity, cable bills, saving up for my old days... screw you Gandalf, I'll pass.

As for the Ridley thing... well, it's a nice way to have him play a role in the game despite not being playable. Too bad most people will see what is actually a gift as a kick in the nuts. By the way, if you KO him, he has his own image in the results screen. Imagine if THAT leaked before the game came out, convincing everyone Ridley would be playable, and this is what we'd get. Holy shit, Sakurai wouldn't only get death threats, at least one crazy would actually kill him.

Regardless, they knew all along about how much people wanted Ridley in, and while this is a nice workaround to the size issue (along with everything else), this basically means that his odds of making it into a future Smash game are about the same as those of President Gerald Ford.

Scratch that, you can make a Gerald Ford Mii if you really want to. So make that LESS likely.

  1. Yeah, I'm kind of pissed about the Ridley thing. He's by far the most requested character, but I guess we have to make room for... Duck Hunt. And three clones.

I was always going to get both versions, so the DLC doesn't bother me. This conference only solidified that for me, as the games are very different for the most part. Well, OK, Smash Bros 3DS is essentially a stripped-down version of the Wii U version, with the exception of Smash Run. But I already own the 3DS version, and now they revealed the much better Wii U version's major features, so I'm getting that as well. It doesn't really bother me because Smash is a series that's worth it.

By the way, some people are speculating that Mewtwo may be available as paid DLC to anyone who doesn't get both games, and the free thing is a bonus to those who buy both. I don't know if that's true or not.

    1. Don't forget Wii Fit Trainer! I will never get that inclusion.

And yeah, I heard the same thing from someone on a forum as well. I really doubt Mewtwo will only be available via owning both versions of Smash 4. This reminds me of... at least one character's costume in Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy being only available through a code that's included with new copies of a certain game. It was never put up for sale on PSN by itself. However, in this case, it was just an alternate skin, not a whole freaking character.

    2. The Wii series made Nintendo huge wads of cash. There's your explanation. That, and I guess they wanted to cover as much ground as possible with their IPs. Of course the whole Ice Climbers thing kinda complicated matters, but whatever. The Corner of Shame should just not be in this game. Period. I mean, they had the perfect excuse to make Dark Pit completely different from Pit, and they botched it so horribly.

    3. About the Corner of Shame, that reminds me, can I just say how much I hate the character slot argument? Not saying that you're playing that card, just that I'm reminded of it, and it's so annoying. There's no such thing as a "stolen character slot." Lucina was originally an alt, so I think it's safe to assume the same was true for Doc and Dark Pit. They were after thoughts. The roster was already there. They're literally just extra content. I have no problem with them simply because they're just extras, and them not being in the game would just mean, well, them not being in the game. It wouldn't magically put Ridley or K. Rool on the roster like some folks delude themselves into thinking. So because of that, (and, I'll admit because I prefer Dr. Mario and Lucina to their originals) I'm okay with them. Now, as far as what YOU'VE said, I see where you're coming from, of course. Dark Pit and Lucina could have been completely unique, Dark Pit especially. Dr. Mario, maybe not so much, but then again Captain Falcon was built from scratch. But while there's no good reason for them exist, they're honestly not taking away from anything.

    4. I'm fully aware that they're not replacing anyone, and that if they weren't there we'd have just 45 characters. I just think the roster looks a bit sloppier with them there than if they weren't there at all. Not that it factually changes anything, it's just a matter of appearances. And lost opportunities, as we said.

  2. In regard to Ridley, it really does seem like a final acknowledgement that he's simply never going to work as a playable character in Smash, and this seems like a fig leaf to all the Ridley fans to make up for that fact. I don't think they would go to these lengths for any other non-playable character.

I don't even own a Wii U and don't really plan to. Just not worth it for me. I'm just gonna hold out hope that Mewtwo will be made available as regular old paid DLC at some future point.

On another note, the new stage builder does look amazing. Maybe the only thing that makes me a little sad about probably never playing the Wii U version.

  3. Speaking of the size thing for Ridley, not that I particularly care if he's ever a playable character, but one question I've been meaning to bring up is what's preventing them from making him smaller? You have Olimar and Kirby who had their height increased, and others who had their height changed, I'm sure. Plus, if fans managed to make him work (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxVkSaVgm1A#t=2m30s), then it shouldn't be too hard for the actual developers, right?

Like I said, I don't really care about him being in or not, but those point were brought to my attention one day, and... well, couldn't think of anything to say to it.

    1. I think the general argument is that unlike other resized characters, Ridley's large size is an integral part of what makes him so badass, and shrinking him all the way down to the size of a Smash fighter would go against the essence of the character. Plus, he has rather awkward proportions for a would-be fighter. Of course, there's Melee's opening film as a counterpoint, but that was a film, not gameplay.

Not that I necessarily subscribe to that argument, I'm fairly agnostic on Ridley. But it's the one I've seen most often from people who like the character but don't want him playable.

All that said, maybe it's just that Sakurai & co. are just lazy. Wouldn't be the first time.

  4. I'm going to buy both versions plus all of the amiibo.

I look forward to being homeless with Mewtwo.

  5. The mewtwo DLC will be available on the EShop, so need to worry. NoE's twitter confirmed, I'll provide a link if I find it.
