Meet Mehga Beedrill and Mehga Pidgeot

No, that's not a typo, that's how everyone feels after seeing this. Seems like almost all the new megas are either total crap or obviously broken, with little room for anything in between.

Anyway, Mega Beedrill. Wow. It has a very similar BST to that of Mawile, and virtually none of the assets. No awesome STAB combination, no insane defensive typing, no priority, no Intimidate cheese, barely anything. So Huge Power clearly would've been a more appropriate fix than Adaptability. Sure, we've seen with Mega Lucario how great Adaptability is, but base Lucario is at least somewhat respectable. Not so for Beedrill.

As for Mega Pidgeot... here's to hoping for a big boost to special attack, because virtually the only thing that can be accomplished with No Guard is boosting the accuracy of Hurricane and Heat Wave. Its physical moves already have 100 accuracy anyway (aside from the very questionable Steel Wing), so I'm hoping for it to become more special-based, if only because of that.

Mega Lati@s were also officially revealed, although we already knew everything about them, right down to the ability and stats. One thing I find particularly weird, though, is that they were in X/Y's code, but none of the other new megas were. I wonder why? Anyway, seems like you can also fly around the skies of Hoenn with them, in what appears to be a very similar mechanic to Ranger 3. And just like in Ranger 3, you can find all kinds of Pokémon you couldn't otherwise, including legendaries. And not just any legendaries either, we're talking about the likes of Dialga, Palkia, Reshiram and Zekrom here. So you know how most games before X/Y had a TON of legendaries available for capture? After really cracking down on them in X/Y, looks like that notion is back.

Edit: Basically, all non-event legendaries from gens 2, 4 and 5 will be found with that sky mechanic. That is beyond excessive. Unless, of course, there are version exclusives, or other such restrictions. Of course, this might be either to avoid penalizing those who don't have Bank, to allow every Pokémon short of cover legendaries and events in upcoming VGC formats, or both. Still, maybe they should've kept some for Z/XY2, because holy shit that's a lot of legendaries. Maybe they can have their hidden abilities? The gen 2 and 3 trios as well as Heatran are still missing them, among others.

Edit 2: Mega Pidgeot's main stat boost is to special attack, confirming its purpose as a foolproof Hurricane/Heat Wave user. This is good, because despite the number of Normal/Flying Pokémon none of them fill a niche as special attacker without absolutely sucking at it. Unfortunately its best special Normal move is Swift, which means Return and Quick Attack are likely going to be the best choices. Or Hyper Beam... just kidding. That is, unless Hurricane and Heat Wave are good enough that Normal is unneeded. As for Beedrill, it gets big boosts to attack and speed. So despite the good ability when an exceptional one was required, at least they're not screwing it up too hard.

  1. I hope now that my love for Pidgeot finally isn't in vain anymore.

  2. Well, legendaries coming back was expected . At least we now know what is up with that evil purple stuff on the new Hoenn Map.

It bugs me that the Mega Latias doesn't have its matching color. Well, there's the eye color, but still.

  3. At least these two new Megas can have some use in the low tiers, so they have that going for them. Beats being too good that they're banned, but that's my opinion. Also, to be fair, I'd put Mega-Slowbro as in-between, ditto Mega-Audino (it's more doubles-oriented to be fair, but that's not a bad thing per se).

A bit surprised at how they chose to go about it but makes sense to have all these sky islands, it allows them to add the additional content without screwing too much with the base map. It'll be good to add all those legends so that we don't need to screw around bringing them in from previous gens (plus I presume legendary mechanics from X/Y still apply).

  4. Imagine if you somehow ever LPed ORAS. You'd have to spend hours just devoted to catching all of the legendaries...

  5. If Serebii is right, we're going to be getting a hell of a lot of legendaries with that sky mechanic. Off the top of my head... Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Ho-oh, Lugia, Mesprit, Azelf, Uxie, Heatran, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Cresselia, Cobalion, Virizion, Terrakion, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem. Unless I'm reading the news post incorrectly? We're supposed to be able to obtain all non-event legendary Pokemon in Gen VI through this method, and those are all the remainders.

    1. That is... excessive, to say the least. At least keep some for Z/XY2. Sheesh.

  6. Where's Mehga Butterfree? oô
With Mehga Beedrill confirmed, it's to be expected. It's probably gonna be just as bad though.

  7. Hmm, how strange. I believe in your old rants, you mentioned that the only three-stage evolution Pokes in NU (the old NU, back in DP) were Pidgeot and the Level 10 bugs. Not anymore, I guess.
But wait! Mega Pidgeot? And remember who had a Pidgeot Ace?
    BLUE CONFIRMED!!!!1!!111!!!!

  8. Two comments on Pidgeot: (1) It actually does learn Uproar, which while not the best move is still at least solid (I'd say it's main issue is no one worthwhile learns it AND has STAB), so that's at least an option (may still want quick attack as an option or as a fourth move of course), (2) No Guard can hurt it pretty bad too now that Stone Edge, Rock Slide, and Blizzard can hit it no worries, which may not be as big a deal in singles but in doubles/triples it can do more harm than good.

    1. Being locked into a move is just not worth it when it's only 90 power, though. Not to mention, most of what resists both Hurricane and Heat Wave also resists Normal anyway.

Besides, Hurricane and Heat Wave never missing easily offsets what you pointed out, to be frank.

    2. I know, but I still found it worth mentioning that it's at least an option. Non-ideal, but it's there. But as you suggested, except for electric types, anyone resisting flying resists normal anyway. I wouldn't use it myself (Hurricane, Heat Wave, Roost, Quick Attack would probably be my own set).

  9. Now what are you talking about Slow? There was a special Normal/Flying type. How could you possibly forget Chatot and its insta-confusion move?

    1. If you really want to nitpick THAT much, you might as well have mentioned Noctowl, Mattman324. Now your nitpick just sounds half-assed. :P

    2. Noctowl isn't really a special attacker as much as a support Pokémon that occasionally uses Air Slash or Hyper Voice.

    3. Well, I never used the darn thing to be honest, I just know it has more Special Attack than Attack, that's why I said that. ^^"

  10. Just watch them add some kind of special normal type move to Pidgeot's movepool to make it useable. Hyper Voice anyone?

    1. It's Gamefreak we're talking about. It wouldn't surprise me if they thought Uproar and even Hyper Beam were appropriate solutions.

But yeah, Hyper Voice or even Nature Power would be great.

  11. What I really, really want out of ORAS is more outfit combinations. I wanted the option for, say, Pokemon Ranger outfits, or Team Flare outfits (I even saved up 5,000,000 before the Pokeball Factory). I think that a Team Magma/Aqua outfit would certainly make sense, as if Ruby/Sapphire were anything to go by, you were allied with a team).
