Hey Nintendo, up your security already.

After some people got Pokémon X/Y a week and a half early last year, you'd think they'd be more careful. Well nope. Some people already got the 3DS version of SSB4. OVER THREE WEEKS EARLY. Jesus Christ, Nintendo, get your act together. Does any other company have this much trouble withholding their games until release day? (Edit: It helps when the Japanese release is scheduled weeks earlier than everyone else, I guess...)

Anyway, the most important thing to know is that the previously leaked roster is, much to my surprise, COMPLETE. There are 48 characters in total, and yes, Dr. Mario, Dark Pit and Lucina are all far away from the rest of their series in the final configuration (as opposed to Melee and Brawl where they'd all be grouped together). And what do these characters have in common? Barring Dr. Mario's down+B and Dark Pit's Final Smash, they're our clone trio for this installment. And they were placed right before the second- and third-party characters to boot. Yep, they knew what they were doing. Very disappointed that they didn't even bother giving Dark Pit Pit's Brawl moveset, I assumed from the start that was the entire reason why they brought Dark Pit in anyway! Why wasn't he an alternate costume then? If it works for the goddamn Koopalings, it has to work for Dark Pit too!

This means Wolf, Lucas, the Ice Climbers and Snake all got the axe. (PK Freeze is a customizable move for Ness, so there's the death sentence right there.) Not sure how the 3DS couldn't handle four Ice Climbers AIs if the Gamecube could, but hey. That's assuming the technical difficulties thing was correct, anyway. And, well, we all kinda figured Snake wasn't coming back, because we would've heard about it a long time ago if he did.

  1. The game comes out tomorrow in Japan, so it hasn't leaked THAT badly...

As for Dark Pit, word is that he has brawl Pit's side-B and down-B

    1. Oh... right.

Kinda weird that Pokémon would do worldwide releases but not Smash.

    2. I agree, I feel like the game should be a lot closer than 23 days away.

    3. Oh, and apparently Dark Pit DOES have the same moves as new Pit, including the side-B.

  2. I don't usually get on this train, but Dark Pit's inclusion as a whole separate character really does smack of a little creator favoritism. But then, you'd expect at least a few unique moves for him if that were the case...

I was surprised that the leaked roster was final too. I guess there's at least the possibility of future DLC to flesh it out a bit more.

I was very surprised that someone didn't get the game even earlier, actually. Given how early X&Y got out. And given that, well, it's Smash. To keep all copies of this game under wraps until the final 36 hours or so...was kind of impressive, by Nintendo's recent standards anyway.

    1. I can't possibly imagine no one on the dev team even considering giving Dark Pit Pit's old moves. They simply had to have that conversation at some point, and someone decided making him a clone was better.

That, or Dark Pit was a last-minute addition. "Well, we tried everything, but we can't make the Ice Climbers work. But there's an empty character slot now! Who do we put in?" And then Sakurai... well, you know. I hate to pull that card, but there we go.

On the other hand, Dark Pit's presence as he currently is really isn't any less justified than Dr. Mario's or Lucina's, really.

    2. Yeah, that's what I meant, I wouldn't be surprised if Dark Pit was a last-minute piece of roster padding who wouldn't have gotten a second look if it weren't Sakurai at the wheel.

Not that that's a crime or anything, of course. Clones are part of the Smash tradition by now. Just how it may have gone down.

  3. Okay, so my mains will probably switch between Dr. Mario, Mega Man, Shulk, and Ness...

  4. We now know what Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon's abilities do.

They introduce "Harsh Sunlight" and "Heavy Rain" which look identical to the normal sun and rain counterparts, with 2 exceptions.

    1) While they're in effect other weather moves (( Rain dance etc )) won't work. Maybe lesser weather abilities would be blocked too?
    2) They stop the opposite type of moves from working at all. Water type moves can't be used under harsh sunlight and Fire type moves can't be used under heavy rain.

No word on how long they last from what I've seen

    1. And yes, that does mean that Primal Groudon's ability brings up a condition which makes the type of its most crippling weakness unuseable. So much for that type change being a hindrance.
