The event move dartboard returns!

A poll was held to determine who between Victini, Jirachi, Manaphy and Darkrai would get a special distribution as a tie-in to the Klefki short associated with movie 17. Well, Darkrai turned out to be the winner, and was given a randomly picked move that it can't learn otherwise. And this time, the dart thrown by a blindfolded Junichi Masuda hit PHANTOM FORCE! OOOOOOOOONE HUNDREEEEEED AND EEEEEEEEEEEEIGHTYYYYYYYYY!!!

What, you don't believe my story? How else could a crappy non-STABbed physical move be given to a Pokémon with 90 base attack (which would be low even by OU standards) and 135 base special attack? Oh well, it's no big deal, I think we can all agree that Darkrai definitely doesn't need another useful move. Unlike the other three. Why, oh why did Darkrai have to win?

  1. I guess they just wanted another chance at the Darkrai event despite it being the only one of the four that literally needs no help to be dominant...

  2. I guess they decided that since Victini, Jirachi, and Manaphy were distributed the least and Darkrai had been distributed more that we really needed another Darkrai distribution. Pffft, my pokedex is still 2 slots short because I missed the ONE manaphy event here seven years ago.

  3. I'm actually happy to see this. I have never had a Darkrai before. My first event Pokémon was the shiny Dialga event, and Darkrai has always been one of my favorite Pokémon.

    1. I love Darkrai too and odds are I would probably get it. But Phantom Force was something that it didn't need. Why couldn't it have been Aura Sphere instead?

    2. Yeah, because Darkrai wasn't good enough on it's own.

    3. What I meant was that I'm happy that there will be a Darkrai distribution. Of course Phantom Force is useless.

    4. That was probably for MasterLemon with his Aura Sphere comment.

    5. Oh, right. That makes more sense.

  4. I think Masuda is under the influence that Darkrai is a Ghost type.

  5. Well... I don't really own a Darkrai, so I guess I'm okay with that, but I sure won't hide the fact that I would have preferred any of the other 3... especially Victini...

  7. The reason why it got phantom Force is because the only dark type moves introduced this generation are Topsy-Turvy and Parting shot. phantom force at least makes sense for a move that darkrai would have. Even though phantoms are ghosts, Darkia can at least be described as being phantom like in appearance. Where as Topsy-Turvy and Parting Shot make no sense for Darkrai because he is just not the kind of Pokemon to use moves like that. I don't know who all learns Topsy-Turvy but that move by the sounds of it would only be learned by Spinda and Inkay/Malamar. As for Parting Shot I'm not sure how that move is performed but it looks weak so why bother giving that to a Legendary. Also looking at the other moves introduced I don't see much else that would make sense for Darkrai to learn, Trick-or-Treat maybe but that is about it.

    1. For all we know, Parting Shot could be a great move, it's just that Pangoro sucks so hard it never gets used, and Smeargle has better things to do.

Whether Darkrai could get any mileage out of it, though, is completely up to the imagination.

    2. The description says "With a parting threat, the user lowers the target's Attack and Sp. Atk stats. Then it switches with a party Pokémon." Hmm I'm not sure I can imagine Darkrai having a move that makes a threat. Makes sense on Pangoro because he is like a gangster panda. To understand why Game Freak gives Pokemon certain moves and not others you have to think out side of statistics. Except flying Pikachu nothing can explain how that works. Maybe Pikachu finds a jet pack?

    3. Additional information for why I don't think it makes sense for Darkrai to get Parting Shot. Well you may like to think of it as a dart board but I like to think they sit around talking about the Pokemon and possible moves. I like to think the conversation would have went something like. Person 1: Okay Darkrai needs one of the new moves for this event distribution. Person 2: What about Parting Shot? Person 3: No no that doesn't make sense. Darkrai's whole thing is he is all about putting you to sleep and giving you really bad nightmares that you can't awaken from. So why would he be threatening you if you're asleep? Person 4: Yeah Person 3 is right. You wouldn't feel very threatened when you're snoozing. How about Phantom Force instead? Darkrai is dark and spooky like a phantom. Person 1: It's perfect! Okay onto the next issue at hand. ect.

    4. I would like to see the meeting where they talked themselves into thinking it made sense for everything to learn toxic.

    5. Flying Pikachu is because of balloons, actually.
