No, I'm not planning a comeback.

No one asked yet, but with the impending shitstorm of suck striking the Pokémon LP scene, you can bet someone would have (and probably will anyway). So he who shall not be named decided to do a fifth Pokémon LP (that's going to be only one half less than me once he completes it, mind you), that being XD. But if that wasn't enough, I've heard the Game Grumps took it upon themselves to make him look like Ray Rizzo. I mean, I haven't seen that train wreck myself, but training a Weedle to take on Brock? Please, everyone knows it's BUTTERFREE you take up against Brock, not BEEDRILL. And that's if you take Charmander at the beginning, otherwise there's no problem... guess what starter they picked? Heck, Gamefreak even gave Metal Claw to Charmander just so chumps bad enough to pick it would stand a chance, but nope. Here comes the invincible armada of Weedle, Rattata, Pikachu and Metal Claw-less Charmander! Can you think of a worse four-Pokémon team to fight Brock with?

Bottom line, I'm glad I jumped the hell out of that ship once it started sinking. No sense in trying to keep it afloat against all odds, right? I mean, who am I, that squid from this horrible Titanic animated movie? Screw the scuba gear, screw the submarines, I'm not going back there.

  1. You know it's a train wreck when the anime does a better job at choosing pokemon than them.

    1. Yeah, Buneary using Ice Beam on Glalie sure is better strategy. But at least the anime is fictional.

    2. I was referring to the fact that even Ash wasn't stupid enough to choose Beedrill. (even though I'm pretty sure he wasn't smart enough to actually use Butterfree against Brock)

      Delete
    3. Nonono, get it right. They're not really taking a Beedrill to fight Brock.

They're taking a Weedle to fight Brock.

As in, an UNEVOLVED, LEVEL FIVE WEEDLE.

    4. That's worse than when Lewis of BrainScratchComms used Kakuna and Metapod to fight Brock when he had a MANKEY!...

    5. WOW! Did he? I never paid attention to the gen 1 videos of BSCs.

    6. Wait unevolved!? Do they honestly think Brock's Onix is going to use nothing but bide and get lucky enough to poison it and stall it until it faints? Hell, I don't even think Brock's Onix has that move in the remakes...

    7. That playthrough improved a lot when Johnny took over playing responsibilities...

    8. In the anime Butterfree would be crushed by Onix. Ash had no chance in that episode. He was lucky the gym had sprinklers and electricity worked on Onix.

Speaking of in-game, it's Onix. Its Sp.Def is shit. He dies to three Embers at least. And you don't choose Charmander if you're not looking for a challenge, especially in RBY where it had low Special.

Still, saying "Charmander sucks!" is being overly simplistic. Bulbasaur is the best against the gyms, but it's abysmal against what it can't handle, like Pokémon Tower, Silph Co and the gyms it's weak against. I'd say Squirtle is a more balanced starter than Bulbasaur. And Charmander's gym weaknesses don't mean a whole lot since there are plenty of Pokémon strong against the gyms available in routes around them. In FRLG, Charmander was massively boosted with bigger Sp.Atk and early Flamethrower.

  2. I see Game Grumps as more of a "don't do this while playing this game" series of videos than a Let's Play group. I think their comedy is pretty good, but a kindergartner could probably play better than they do (and not just in Pokémon).

    ReplyDelete
  3. I commented on the Game Grump's most recent video to call that their series is going to end before they beat Brock. I can't imagine they're going to try any more than two or three times before giving up, and they're not the kind of players that can stomach grinding. Plus, even if their Charmander learns Metal Claw, what are the chances Arin is going to figure out Steel beats Rock? Sometimes I get really sick of them not knowing or paying attention of how to play the games they do, but I've accepted that they're just doing this to fuck around for a few episodes and then move on. I mean, they're funny, but they don't really care about their show all that much. At least Chugga puts in a hell of a lot of effort and genuinely cares.

  4. So no comeback then? Kidding, to be honest I pretty much haven't watched any other pokemon LPs since you left and am kinda glad. Either it's over-saturated with X/Y or you get mediocre LPs from "top tier" LPers that make you want to shoot yourself for wasting such valuable time. Actually to be honest I no longer watch half the LPers I used to check out regularly (at least depending on the game they're doing). Not that I've much time but most of the regulars just....I don't know it feels more dumbed down and WAY WAY WAY WAY too much fucking pandering. ["Look it's Steve! IN THE BATHROOM!"]

    3. Furthermore, it's already beyond stupid to use the term "autism" as an insult as it is, but it's another thing entirely to use it in the face of someone with Asperger's. GTFO.

      Delete
    4. 1st: I'm pretty sure I've watched damn near every single one of you videos and don't know how I was supposed to know you had Aspergers.
      2nd: I don't care.

      Delete
    5. I don't see how not knowing that Slowflake has Aspergers is relevant. Even if he didn't have it, it's still a really stupid move to just assume that everyone is going to just let your comment slide.

      Delete
    6. Ah, yeah, I was wondering when this cancer (the "autism as an insult", or possibly as some sort of twisted badge of "honor"--it's baffling, really) was going to leak off of 4chan and infect everything else (although it probably already had). I may not like Chuggaa either (at all, really, but that's another subject altogether), but this flagrant misuse of terms in the English language, be it diagnoses for mental states or ambiguous terms now used for sexual preference or what have you, is just inexcusable...and I just realized I just made an eyrie's worth of nested comments up there. Hell, once I finished the National Dex (just yesterday, as a matter-of-fact), I got the hell out of there--there's a reason I always quote Ben Kenobi when describing 4chan...and Gamefaqs...(which could be the same crowd, for all I know).

    7. The only "fucking twat" here is you Droid.

Also, about looking at Chugga, NCS and Proton Jon, how on earth is Jon the least most subscribed?

      Delete
    8. Is it just me or do a lot of autistic/Aspie gamers enjoy Pokemon? I mean, it makes sense really: game with a lot of different things to analyze (and over-analyze) obsessively, and happens to not be necessarily "for everyone", etc. Seems like the perfect game for that subset of people. Not that I'm making fun of anyone (I'm another Aspie guy who enjoys the games and does his own analyses), just trying to pick up the trends.

Anyway on the Chuggaa issue, whether or not he's autistic is irrelevant (I think he once said he suspected it but it wasn't the case?), you can dislike the state of his videos due to their pandering nature without going somewhere dark like that. You can dislike the videos or hell even the LPer (Chuggaa the character) without having to insult the person behind them needlessly (Emile himself).

      Delete
    9. Slow likes it, NCS likes it, I like it...Yeah, maybe it just caters to both those who like the simple gameplay and those who like spotting the little things and taking advantage of them...
It's not that he suspected it. He was misdiagnosed as a kid. Least, that's what I read somewhere. Droid's comment as still needlessly rude...

      Delete
    10. Is NCS "on the spectrum"? I don't pay too much attention to his videos but I know he talks a lot about himself but it's very scattered around, so I don't know if he said as much. Wouldn't surprise me though. I have to correct you thoguh, I don't think Pokemon's gameplay is particularly simple. Even on a non-competitive level the gameplay itself is in my opinion much more complicated than, say, Final Fantasy.

I don't think anyone except Emile himself has the full story on it. All I know is that he thought he had it but then turns out he probably wasn't, or something. Bits and pieces from what I picked up, anyway. But yeah Droid was just being an asshole. Even if he didn't choose autism per se, it seems to be a lot of people's M.O. to pick a trait that's not typical and just use it as an insult without understanding what it means nor caring (calling people "fag" and related words is a similar problem). On the other hand, I like when people do that because it helps me figure out who I can safely ignore without regret.

      Delete
    11. In the Secret of Mana LP comments, someone asked if he had Asperger's. He basically said yes...
But Pokemon has the illusion of simplicity that the kids can get behind. People like us can appreciate how complex and massive the games actually are...
That and they probably think that everyone of that category is exactly like an infamously horrid example of someone in that group. Still just as bad...
And who you can block on other websites if THEY don't ignore YOU...

      Delete
    12. Gotcha. Yeah I didn't watch that LP...that was one of his first ones if I recall correctly (well before he was big). I guess in that sense Pokemon is "easy to learn, hard to master", which is part of its appeal to all. Eh, I don't know if they actually think "all X are Y" so much as just too lazy to care and figure if they're not one of them then they're superior. Not just relegated to internet morons either...Blocking is a bonus but I try to avoid areas where the intellect of the typical commentor is severely lacking (e.g. Youtube). That's one good thing about this blog, although its small you usually have few issues with those who do use it.

      Delete
    13. I wouldn't know. I don't watch NCS religiously...
Yes. The kids can beat the games with little issue, but when they face me (or someone who knows how to play the games to their fullest potential), I'll enjoy drinking their tears when I prove that the big, badass Pokemon alone aren't instant win buttons. If you've ever played Touhou, I compare the experience I give them after they've had it easy for so long to when you face Patchouli Knowledge in Touhou...
I love Slow's fanbase. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the wretched hive of scum and villainy most of the Internet lets thrive. I can actually have FUN here. Well, and the small circle I've amassed in the Touhou fanbase, but that's another matter...

  6. I'm willing to give Chuggaa a pass since XD is not done very often(even on the cube, Colosseum hogs the spotlight) but I don't really think the ship is sinking. It sank a long time ago. Between nostalgia, bad players, bad commentary, lame teams, etc. The pokemon LP scene has been shit forever. To find the good ones you need to wait for the cream to rise to the top of the ocean of YouTube stank, and then look at the top of that cream for a good LP

  8. I don't care for Chugga's stuff because he claims to know what he's doing and proves he doesn't at every turn. Game Grumps however I would argue isn't really about the game that they are playing, for them it's more of a back drop to do their show with rather than the focal point of what they are doing if that makes any sense. Also, whether you like their type of comedy or not they make it absolutely obvious that they are not serious in the slightest about what they are doing which makes them far more fun to watch in my opinion.

  9. (jokingly) Metal Claw-less Charmander, Pidgey, Spearow, and Weedle. At least Rattata and Pikachu are not weak to Rock...
I'll still watch his LP of XD if only for the fact that he works hard on it, and there are other things to like about his Pokemon LPs...I'd dare say at least he's miles better than Ash. Least he evolves all of his Pokemon...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Seriously, who watches the Game Grumps for an instructive and informative LP? If you do, then you are doing it wrong. That being said, it is pretty disappointing that there haven't been nearly enough good, successful LPers ever since PewdiePie's infamous rise to notoriety. At least there are still TheRunawayGuys and Versus to keep things interesting (and yes, even Game Grumps at their best). Of course, you mileage may vary. Come to think of it, LPs with multiple people providing commentary are the only ones I care about anymore (with the possible exception of Proton Jon, who is mostly occupied with streaming via Twitch anyway). I guess it's just that one person talking into a microphone for hours and hours about a certain game is very difficult to pull of successfully. NintendoCapriSun's playthrough of Sapphire Version wasn't nearly Slowflake-good, but at least it was kind of refreshing to see a totally blind run of Pokémon from an experienced player. I really do admire Chugga's enthusiasm and all, but he just isn't good enough at the games he plays for his style of videos to work, at least for my tastes.

  12. I'm surprised chuggaaconroy is still a thing.

  13. Anyone that's been in the FMT thread for a period of time knows that despite (in the past) giving him commentary advice, I have my own misgivings on Chuggaaconroy's play style when it comes to Pokemon. He does put in a lot of effort to make the LP look good, but when it's crunch time and he's required to use a somewhat decent team, he'll pick six completely random pokemon that don't really mesh well together.

Ever noticed how he's always slightly underleveled for the enemies in the game? Well, go and look at any of his teams at the end of any respective Pokemon LP (with the exception of the level jump in Colosseum) and it's right there. Chuggaa knows how to present a game well (and praise it to no end) whilst also knowing how to pander to his audience.

I gotta be honest too: his audience lowered the quality of NCS and Proton Jon's videos considerably. NCS is still watchable if the game's good (his Dragon Quest LP for example) but can put out some shocking videos every once in a while (Flappy Bird.) As for Proton Jon, Superman 64 has long gone past being a running joke and I personally didn't see his Resident Evil co-op with Super Jeenius. He's at least streaming more often, so there's that. I just have my own issues with people getting paid to stream games over Twitch.

Yeah, I can see where one would say he contradicts himself. I dunno. I'm still entertained by his LPs. Guess I like seeing how he'll assess the situation with his more limited team or something. Sure, he assesses it badly at times (Brawly), but still...

      Delete
    4. What you say about him assessing the situation is pretty much why I watch his LPs, It's kinda fun to watch someone else play Pokemon with a different team than you would use as long as they know what they are doing.

However in Chugga's case, it's been a long time since I watch any of his Pokemon LPs( the last was Colosseum which was last year and before that was his Firered LP. I still haven't watch his Emerald LP so I don't know how he did in it) so I await to see how he does in his XD LP.

    5. I know. Not everyone can be like Slow and, to some extent, me and blitz through everything (I beat Y in about 4 days). It's entertaining to see how he'll get out of tough fights with, again, his rather limited team (remember: He used Frenzy Plant in FireRed). He knows enough to know what are the really crappy, stay away from them Pokemon, at least...
His Emerald LP was...eh? It wasn't terrible, but it left a lot to be desired. Especially since my first real Emerald LP was Slow's, and I don't need to tell you what I thought of that LP of his (got my friend laughing at the adult anime joke)...
As for XD, he's starting off decently. He at least evolved Eevee into the best one at the time (Jolteon; my favorite and the only one I really like)...

    6. Well, blitz the enemy trainers that are not the Blue rematch, at least...

    7. Yeah, I can get a pretty good team in any of the Pokemon games and breezes through with some challenge against certain matches. I don't exactly disagree with his choice of Pokemon in his LPs, but to me there's always some better Pokemon(Persian) or questionable moves( I recall watching one Emerald video where he had Slaking whom I like not in a competitive sense, but in a In-game sense use Hyper Beam...)
Funny enough, It was one of Chugga's Crystal videos that got me to Slow in the 1st place in 2010 so I am always grateful for that.
And his Emerald LP was the 1st one I fully watched with Red and Crystal. I then sub to him as he did Plat

    8. BTW, Jolteon is my favorite of the Eeveelutions as well so I was glad Chugga picked it.

      Delete
    9. Is it sad that I like Regigigas more than Slaking? Is it sad that I like either of them at all? I mean, in a competitive sense, Regigigas does make a good punchline on a joke team. He defended that choice because he could still switch out if he killed something with it. Still not recommended for obvious reasons...
Discovered (or re-discovered, since the very first thing I watched of Slow was the Sonic 2 LP. I know it was Slow because of the MS Paint drawing) him in Emerald, took a break, then re-discovered him and subscribed as he was finishing Platinum. Needless to say, I fell in love with the guy's work, and I remodeled my style of playing Pokemon to be closer to his (he also got me into competitive play). I didn't even notice Slow's videos while Chugga was doing Crystal. Hell, I wasn't even watching his Crystal LP when he was doing it...

    11. There's a lot of Poemon that I like that isn't good in the OU metagame(Primeape,Hitmons,Raichu,Pangoro) so there's nothing wrong with liking them. I am just not delusional to say they belong in OU.
What impresses me with Slow's work not only how knowledgeable he was at the games, but how EASY he made it at times. If my younger self knew that Kadabra/Haunter could learn Ice and Thunder Punch in GSC,Lance would have been more easier to handle...
And Although I knew of Smogon before I watch Slow, He was pretty much my newscaster guy on what Smogon is doing,How they operate, and why they ban this and that. So in a way, Slow introduces me to the Metagame as well in Plat.

After watching Slow and getting another chance, I beat him on my first try. Didn't even have to resort to complex strategies. Then again, I actually grind the Pokemon to relatively equal levels...
Never really knew of Smogon until Slow. He got me into the competitive scene...

I enjoy them as well as your Pokemon LPs, but for different reasons. I watched yours for actual information and intelligent commentary, but I'll watch Game Grumps fail miserably at a Pokemon game and enjoy it partially because I do find them funny as people, but also because they don't take themselves seriously when they play it. They know they suck and acknowledge it too, so I don't try to compare between the two of you.

As for Chuggaa, my friends dickride the fuck outta him and it bothers me to no end. Primarily because he isn't either category that GG or you are in, he just attempts to sound like he knows shit about Pokemon but constantly makes idiotic moves, but no, he's the "greatest LPer of all time".
