Scumbag Slowflake: Quits LPing, gets new controller immediately afterwards

Yeah, now I wish I'd done that a while ago, for all the times I complained about my old POS. I grabbed a wired 360 controller to replace my dying Logitech Dual Action. Well, the word "dying" may be an exaggeration, but it definitely wasn't working perfectly anymore either. I'm playing through Sonic Generations for the first time, and this is the time it chose to give me headaches with unwanted quickstep shenaningans.

It got especially bad in that one challenge in Green Hill Zone where you have a triple boost gauge. There's a 3D part with spikes that you have to quickstep around (or jump over, either or), and every single time Sonic would gravitate toward the left, totally unable to do anything else, even jump, and I'd smack into spikes every single time, release everything on the controller, then watch as Sonic would quickstep into the fence on the left for five seconds DESPITE ME NOT PRESSING ANYTHING. So I tested this with my brother's controller which was very similar (the only difference was that it had a rumble feature), and although he did have some issues too, they were nowhere near as severe. So after over three years, I caved in and bought a 360 controller, and it worked so flawlessly that I nailed an S rank on the challenge on my first try (in fact it wasn't even close). And the best part is, NO MORE SQUARE ANALOG STICK SOCKETS. I prefer the octagons found on the N64, Gamecube and Wii controllers, but circles are great too. Infinitely better than squares! (And yes, I suggested that my brother buy one too, since he had issues as well.)

The annoying part, though, was disabling the rumble feature (I hate it, it messes with my concentration and reflexes). There's no feature for that anywhere, so I had to find a specially made DLL file and put it in the Sonic Generations folder. Oddly enough it wouldn't work in the System32 folder, so this basically means I'd have to add it to the folder of any game I want to use the controller on. Not that it's that big of a problem, mind you. Oh no, I have to make multiple copies of an 80 kb file! Whatever shall I do?

Kind of ironic that a console controller functions better on a PC than a dedicated PC controller. Master race my ass. (As if the general demeanor of PC elitists didn't give you that impression already.)

  1. My 360 controller never rumbles, and I didn't alter any settings for it. Also, I hope you don't play any games that require the do as. It is atrocious. That said, I really like the 360 controller a lot, really nice for driving games in particular.

  2. I have only one warning, the 360 d-pad is complete ASS! It is as bad as the gamecube's . Then again, at least it isn't smaller than my thumb. To be fair, I think the gamecube's d-pad would work well if I elf or gnome fingers (sarcasm). The point is, I hope you have better luck with it than most or don't play games that rely on it

    1. the 360 dpad is the worst dpad in the history of gaming. I've been thinking of getting a USB SNES controller of ebay for some games. It just doesn't have enough buttons for most games though :(

  3. I had the exact same problem with my old Logitech controller while I was playing through Generations. It would work fine for the 2D sections, but the modern Sonic levels were damn near unplayable until I got myself a usb Xbox 360 controller. Only problem is that the d-pad for the 360 controller is WAY too sensitive to downward inputs, which leads to some really annoying hijinks when I try to use it to play other 2D games. I still use my old crappy Logitech controller for that very reason.

  4. Well, from the mentality of PC gamers, a mouse and keyboard will always be infinitely better than any controller ever could be, so why bother putting competent effort into making a console-esque pc controller?

    1. Considering that all they really need to do is not make a square analog stick area (most of them already are otherwise equivalent to a PS controller), it's not difficult.

    2. Keyboards have WSAD, not WSADEQZX.

  5. I have an Afterglow PS3 type controller that my friend gave me, and a good old fashioned usb NES controller i got for like 8 bucks on amazon. The replica system usb controllers you can get (Genesis, SNES, N64, PS3, 360) are actually pretty cheap on amazon. I think $25 is like the most expensive. I've heard especially good things about the N64 one, like the fact it has a metal rod in the analog stick socket instead of plastic that was in the original ones that would always get wore down and grinded away.

  6. Now that we're on the topic, what are your first impressions with Generations? Or are you gonna do a little thought dump post?
