Pokémon Smash hints at new type?

Indeed, a segment during the show suggested that Sylveon was weak to Fighting and strong against Ice, much like the Steel type... but it's also affected by Poison in some way, which suddenly rules Steel out. So unless they're revising the type chart, then Sylveon may actually be of an entirely new type. The greatest irony is that this data basically contradicts any and all "leaked" info of a new type we've had, aside from a potential Poison weakness.

For the record though, a new type is still a terrible idea. I'm sticking by that. (Especially if Ice becomes even worse defensively...)

  1. Though maybe Game Freak are planning on doing an overhaul this gen like the Ability and Nature overhaul in Gen III.

  2. If they added a new type wouldn't the hidden power chart need to be changed?

    1. Not a big issue, it had already changed from gen 2 to gen 3. Besides, it sort of needs an overhaul, because it's nearly impossible to get a Dark-type Hidden Power, and it'd be kinda nice if we could get a Normal one too.

  3. If they ARE going to add a new type, this indicates a Gen 3 style overhaul of the mechanics to accommodate Hidden Power and such. That could potentially be pretty interesting to see. Maybe they could implement having two abilities at once, like in Mystery Dungeon?

    1. Meh, as far as Hidden Power goes they can just change the algorithm around a bit and be done with it. Either that or have it be completely independent of IVs, like shininess was from gen 3 on. Doesn't mean we'll be getting a massive overhaul of everything.

  4. Though we only have one previous example to work with, the last time new types were added (Gen II), there were still tweaks made to the type chart (e.g. Bug <-> Poison).

Adding a new type would present the perfect chance to once again adjust the type matchups. It may well end up that Ice isn't getting as nerfed as we'd like to believe.

Though I'll admit that I wouldn't have high expectations for assuming *any* type matchup change. All we can do is be cautiously optimistic (or cautiously pessimistic for you glass-half-empty folks) and see what the future will bring.

  5. I don't believe we'll get any new types. If we do, then I'll be rightfully shocked.

    2. Maybe they were just screwing around. Bulbagarden said crazy stuff like this is typical.

  6. Game Freak really hates their Ice types, don't they?
