Éclair form's existence confirmed, but not name itself

CoroCoro's now out, and the only thing of note in it is that it confirms the new Mewtwo form is indeed just that. It doesn't outright refer to it as the Éclair form however, but at this point there's no reason to believe it's a fake name.

I'm a bit surprised at how many people are shocked by this. Despite the previous marketing on Pokémon Smash and the official sites, it hardly looked like a brand new Pokémon anyway. I blame Serebii for putting that info not on the front page where it belongs, but in a remote corner of his site where no one would ever think to look.

Now, here's an existential question: do you consider this a gen 1 Pokémon, since the species itself was introduced in gen 1, or a gen 6 Pokémon since that's when it's first going to appear? After all, this is the first time a Pokémon gets a new form in a generation that's not its own. And as far as I can tell, should Mewtwo be obtainable in X/Y, it's going to be the first time a previous legendary is available in the first pair of games of a generation.

  1. Crazy thought: maybe they're replacing Mewtwo's design, and Gen VI's big thing is opening the floodgates to redesigning older Pokémon for a new audience.

Probably not, but it's a thought.

    1. As much as I'd like to see the butthurt that'd come out of this, it's probably not happening, as you said. It's not just because of the whole nostalgia aspect - even though I genuinely like the newer Pokémon better, I still wouldn't like it.

  2. I'll probably inevitably see it as Gen VI Pokemon to be honest. It looks like a Gen VI Pokemon and it'll feel like a Gen VI Pokemon, so it'll feel weird to think of it as a Gen I 'mon.

  3. This may be shocking (no pun intended), but I am actually rather excited for the potential for this new Mewtwo Forme. I will consider it a Gen 6 Pokemon (maybe this is Mewtwo's existential crisis in the movie). Then again, I was excited for the potential of the Kyurem Forme that looks like Zekrom; and we got Black Kyurem, who sucks monkey chunks through a straw, vomits them up, and eats them...

  4. No way I'm considering this in the same brand as the sucky Gen 1 designs. :P

Just kidding (or am I really?) of course. But I really think whether it turns out to be a huge success or a big disappointment, the credits should go to Gen 6, not Gen 1. That's why.

  5. I don't see this being much different than an old Pokémon getting a new ability or set of moves. Would you consider Drought Ninetales a gen 1 Pokémon? I sure would, because it's Ninetales, just with new-found awesomeness.

Besides, Unown got two new formes in gen 3. Would you consider Unown (?) and (!) to be gen 2 or 3? Just something to think about.

    1. I consider Unown (?) and (!) to be Gen 3 Pokemon... (And unnecessary ones as well...) Is that the message you wanted to tell us or did I get it wrong ?

  7. Mewtwo is mentioned to have an existential crisis in the movie. The crisis is probably whether he now belongs in the Cerulean Cave, or wherever he will inevitably be caught in the new region. Granted, the movie will probably take place in Unova, but Mewtwo could want to find the new region...
