Slowbeef and Diabetus vs. the worst LP of all time

No. Not just worst Pokémon LP, worst LP period. In a world where the likes of PewDiePie exist, no less. I dare you to last to the end of this. Even the RP commentary didn't take away the temptation of performing a crucifixion on myself.

Edit: These aren't his first self-fanservicing shenanigans either. Long before his self-insertion through LPs, he did self-insertion... through ROM hacking! Go to 5:55 and be sure to tell me if your last meal didn't make a U-turn and exited through your mouth. I'll give you a cookie.

  1. Don't remind me... *shudders* What sucks is that the commenters on this RP REFUSE to admit this is worst than Pewdiepie. Trust me, my comment was completely shut down by others.

  2. i don't get why its so bad its just a different way of LPing?

    1. 1. It's advertised as blind but most of it seems to be post commentary.
      2. It's a guy trying to sound like a girl 90% of the video in the worst way possible.
      3. The "subplot" he added is very painful to watch and adds absolutely nothing to the video or game.
Heck, I watched all of it and almost wanted to get away from Pokemon ENTIRELY and that's saying something.

    2. It's a combination of a few things. For one, you have to be comfortable with Youtube LP style, which tends to be breezier and more tolerant of minimal editing and more yelling than, say, SA. This bit I have trouble with, and I suspect Slowflake does too given one or two of his April Fools Day videos.

The voicing-the-main-character thing is heavily subjective, so if you're not invested in the premise from the outset then it shuts you out completely because you're just hearing him talking to himself (though he's reasonably good at imitating voices, so that's something). This bit I'm okay with.

Then there's the fact he can't make up his mind whether he's doing it in an immersionist style or having the characters already know of the existence of levels and numerical move power and so on or what, which strains kayfabe.

Then there's the bit where he hits on a fictional character, which is just creepy and wrong and argh and makes my brain hurt.

    3. Self-insertion is always bad. ALWAYS. Too bad it's not just regular self-insertion either, but what can only be referred to as SELF-FANSERVICING. The fact that it's different has no bearing on how good it is, you can LP in tons of creative ways and be good. Unfortunately, this is the sum of everything you can do wrong in the name of creativity.

    4. Oh, and the whole "let's pretend she's older than she is" thing just makes it reach a whole new level of disturbing.

    5. hmm can't argue but it is still entertaining and you can't argue there are far worse out there for LP's.

at least he is not using a bad shaky camera, inaudible.. audio, try to push though incredible emulator lag and he actually puts effort into the LP no matter how hammy or bad the writing.

and besides the post commentary is most likely small notes he jots down while he plays through it the first time and is then put into a script(similar to a NC episode)

also small side note it is not "blind" anymore due to a hiatus and him actually playing the game in that time.

    6. If there are worse LPs out there, I have yet to see any. And I guess someone could be entertained in the same way a train accident is entertaining, but not me. This is probably the only RP by these two in the history of ever that I just wanted to hit the back button on the whole time.

I'll take shaky camcorders, Slender scarecams, garbage audio and shit commentary before this any time. All at once, mind you.

    7. Hm, wall of text, jumping between seemingly unrelated subjects, and shameless plugs of YouTube personalities liked by me. Yes, it is another comment by Ness Prower...it is just how I share my opinion, so I apologize if you are annoyed...beware all ye who enter

The concept is unique, but his execution sucks. If I wanted to watch a subpar but informative Pokemon LP, I would watch Chuggaaconroy's Pokemon LPs. If I want to watch a good Pokemon LP, I can just pull up one of your videos, Slow (imagine if they Retspurae you. Many of your regulars and I would take it well (YOU DO NOT DISS SLOWFLAKE! HE IS BETTER THAN ALL OF YOU COMBINED AT POKEMON!)). If I wanted to read a self-insert fan fic for some reason, I would read a self-insert fan fic. Though there are many LPs of Pokemon out there, your existence proves that you do not need a gimmick besides skill and entertainment, and you have plenty of both. Heck, you are better at doing a blind run in a video than one of the victim's videos. Your Superman 64 LP: comedy gold, and you still got further than 90% of YouTube. His "blind" LP was, as mentioned earlier, a self-insert fan fic (no, I will not watch his actual LP. I get the point from the Retspurae video). I would not be surprised if he made Hilda have sex with his avatar after beating Ghetsis (from what the video had shown, it was a possibility). That guy should see you for how to not suck at LPing Pokemon, and he should see RoahmMythril for how to not suck at a blind run of the game (if the kid's LP was blind). RoahmMythril's LP is of a game called Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Yes, I can mention him about as much as I mention you. You know, freedom of expression and all of that...an aspie has to keep several variations of his hobbies, after all...

Anyway, his video sucked...I guess my OCD was enough to get through it, though I was tempted to click out of the video, even with Retspurae's funny remarks...I did put a comment mentioning you by name, Slow. Hey, people need this thing called "hope" that someone can actually do a fantastic Pokemon LP...

Last subject, guess what the saddest thing is. According to Retspurae, a lot of people actually LIKED that guy's LP (coming from the guy who likes DarknessTheCurse. I say to that...shut up, I find DarknessTheCurse entertaining). Oh, poor, poor people who have not been witness to your awesomeness. I know that not everyone's Pokemon LP can be like yours, but they could still take a page from them...better hope that that guy is exposed to your videos soon and ditches the self-insert fan fic gimmick before it really boils down to the character having sex with the author avatar...

    8. You want to know the worst part? Well, I just added a paragraph to the original post. Check it out... if you dare...

    9. Oh, I dare. I mean, it cannot possibly be that ba-(one viewing at 5:55 to end later). (See Doug Walker's reaction to a bad movie in The Review Must Go On (the Nostalgia Critic is back)) Iiiit is not worth vomiting over...but...does this guy even HAVE a social life? I mean, really, he would be best friends with the guy who writes Sonichu! I mean, I am pathetic, but I at least have some semblance of a social life! I mean, more than that guy! I find anime girls (including Hilda) attractive, but not worth inserting myself into the story or whatever just to profess my eternal love for them and make it intended to be touching and cute. If I did, then I would not be having it intended to be touching. It would be creepy, disturbing, and a sign that something is in their world that is not supposed to be there (kind of like what you call a Creepypasta). Again, that guy and the writer of Sonichu should go BOWLING sometime. Both have self-insert fan DiC's posing as other media. Both have questionable sanity. The difference is that people have not been exposed to the fact that the former is a pathetic waste of extremely valuable space and life...

    14. Alright EVERY SINGLE POST that Slowflake makes on his blog Ness Prower always has to throw in some kind of "omg slowflake I love you your the best Let's Player out there" type bullshit. I mean come on dude, you're trying way to hard to ride Slowflake's dick. It's so painful to just want to try and catch up on his blog because I missed the past few months worth of posts and when I go to the comments I see your dick-riding shit on Every. Single. Post. I don't know what Slowflake thinks about this, but I think it's absolutely weird as fuck. That is all.

The latter, maybe (I prefer calling it, "Seeing Slowflake as a role model since we both have similar disorders, but he is better adjusted than I"). Most of my comments that mention myself are taking JABS at myself (implying I caused someone to go in graphic detail of one's suffering is NOT a good thing). My self-esteem is ABYSMAL! 3. What the actual fuck with the FireEmblem hack? I don't have time to check out the let's play video but will be sure to later!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I know barely anything about Fire Emblem but aren't support conversations supposed to be like only 3-5 text boxes long? The fact that anyone can write that much just about how much someone loves a fictional character is beyond me. (then again the same could be said about just about every fan fiction) Being a ROM hacker myself, I know it's probably possible and easy to implement longer than 3-5 text boxes but, why? Why do it!? No one cares what you think of a fictional character and for the record I lost interest when his avatar showed up and closed the video after the cheesy can't confess your feelings cliche and there was still way more to the video. Seriously, this guy is more than 100x worst than the worst Chugga fanboy and that's saying a lot to even BE the worst Chugga fanboy.
*end rant potentially long enough to be the entirety of a Slowflake video*

  5. I actually know this guy. He's a friend of one of my close friends and we've chatted a bit at livestreams and such. As a friend of a friend, I feel obligated to at least *try* to defend him. Nonetheless, even I have mixed feelings about this whole situation.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a similar "what the fuck is going on?" reaction when he posted the first part. I had a feeling that Retsupurae would have a field day with it if they ever stumbled across it, but I will go on the record as saying it's not the worst or the weirdest thing I've seen people do on youtube. That may say more about me and my browsing history than about him, but that's beside the point.

Here's what I think: LPing a pokemon game? More power to you! Giving character and personality to an otherwise silent protagonist as they (you) play through the game? Sure! If you don't want to/don't have other stuff to talk about, have a little fun! Now here's where things get iffy: inserting yourself into the game and conversing with and interacting with the personality *that you gave the silent protagonist*. This I will admit is dancing deep into "do I keep watching or leave and wash my brain?" territory. It's not necessary and it doesn't add anything to the game--in fact, it shifts the focus from the game to the developing relationship between the LPer and... the LPer.

    1. [continued] Here's the thing: if this whole unnecessary and uncomfortable gimmick wasn't part of his LP, we'd be left with a semi-blind, semi-informative playthrough by a guy with great art skills (he made all the sprite-artwork himself) and creativity in spades--however misplaced in application it may be--and that would be the end of it. I've been subscribed to the guy long before he started LPing White, and this is the only game he's tried a weird gimmick like this in (the ROM hack is whatever) and also the only game he ever will in all likelihood, since he's said that he's definitely not doing the same thing if he gets to LPing other pokemon games at the very least. I hardly think that a one-off cringe-worthy gimmick makes this guy worse than consistently terrible people like PewDiePie, and I think that to liken the 2 is an undeserved insult.

As for the Rom hack: it's fan-fiction, plain and simple. It's hardly unheard-of on the internet. You either pair up characters that aren't already paired up canonically, or you insert yourself into a universe and pair yourself with some other character. Kind of a "have you ever had a crush on a character from some series?" kind of thing, possibly taken to the next level depending on the writer. Since the ROM hack is based on Fire Emblem, where support conversations lead to units developing relationships that sometimes involve romance, well, think about it. All he did was insert himself into the universe in the hack, and rather than have his character turn out a Forever Alone shmuck, he decided to give his character a support line with another character he created that ends in romance. I don't see that as all too weird--certainly no weirder than anything else you would find on fanfiction.net. And like most other fanfiction, just let the strange people do their thing and be on your way. What's there to hate? "Oh look! That guy paired up an unconventional couple or wrote out a romantic interaction between himself and a fictional character! HE'S WORSE THAN IF HITLER AND PEWDIEPIE HAD A BABY!" Fanfiction is just that: fiction written by a fan of a character or series.

Tl;DR? Let me sum things up. Yeah, his LP has him talking to a made-up persona he gave the silent protagonist. I talk to myself. I even TYPE to myself when I'm at the computer. Big whoop. And I've seen his later episodes--nothing close to romantic has come from it so far. He and "Hilda" argue a lot (which may be cause for concern for a different reason) but that's about it: using cheesy self-insertion to flesh out the character he gave her. He's not a bad guy, and as strange as his LP of white is with the whole talking-to-himself thing, he REALLY doesn't deserve the overblown reaction he's been getting from the Retsupurae fans.

  6. That's a good post anemos. I've been subsribed to him and a couple of his buddies who do Fire Emblem LPs and none of them have this wierd gimmick. In one video, even his friends made fun of his Black LP but he took it in stride.

    As Anemos said:
"I hardly think that a one-off cringe-worthy gimmick makes this guy worse than consistently terrible people like PewDiePie, and I think that to liken the 2 is an undeserved insult."

    1. I didn't say the LPer himself was bad, just this LP. Just like how the hockey team that's usually great but only gets 25 wins in a given season doesn't make it immediately worse than the team that hasn't made the playoffs for the last ten years.

As it is, this LPer could be actually pretty decent if he decided to just do a straightforward LP. But we couldn't have that, could we? I may be biased because of my usual contempt for fanfiction as a whole (something I've never hidden from, either), and even then I consider self-insertion to be the worst thing you could do when writing a story. Push that self-insertion envelope to the extreme limit and, well, WYSIWYG.

      Delete
  7. At first I started to watch this then.....Oh god...oh god..if self insert wasnt bad enough, it came to the loud mic,the bad voice acting, and the goddamn "humor". Well shit, "possible" romantic story aside, (I'm sure I could offend anyone by attacking shipping fics) but Mageknight and Pewdiepie are on the same level of earrape

    ReplyDelete
  8. That...was the worst LP I've ever seen. Mageknight404 might not be the worst LPer, but THAT was the worst LP. I don't think I got past the four minute mark, even Slowbeef and Diabetus can't save this one.

  9. All I can say is... Who cares? He's not hurting anybody. It may be a bad LP, but he knows what he's doing when it comes to editing and he had a unique idea. It may have fallen flat, but it certainly had the potential to be good. Even if he was flirting with an in-game character, even if said character is 'underage', I just want to reiterate that he's not hurting anyone. You can make fun of him, but he's not doing anything wrong by making these videos.

    ReplyDelete
  10. He added the Retspurae video to his favourites. What does that say?

    Replies
    1. Huh. Either he is much more mature than I first though and he admitted it might have been a terrible idea, or he just liked the free publicity... even if it was a negative one... Really, I have nothing against the guy himself, I just hate unnecessary self-insertion. Because it's not a good way to show creativity. If he really want to do it, at least he could try to do it in a creative way, not just to have a romantic relationship with female characters.

      Delete
    2. It is probably the latter. Slow would enjoy more people enjoying him after people like me are done flaming Retspurae, and after he is done banning the idiots. Also, I had a dream where I was watching a video, and Slowflake was exploring a new city, and he was fighting a regular trainer with a regular Kyurem, an Incarnate Landorus, and I think a Sceptile in a Triple Battle, I think. I think the dream went that Slow basically went, "F**k this!" and did not beat the trainer. Granted, by then (he was exploring the city in the post-game), he would have had Legendaries to beat them anyway. His Pokemon were about 10 levels lower than the Trainer's, though. My dreams are weird...

  11. Yeah that pokemon LP is bad. He isn't a BAD Lper this was just a bad Idea. Self inserts almost always suck when in text form other than a few notable exceptions. Self inserts in any form other than text are just weird and bad.
I actually liked Mageknight's Advance Wars Days of Ruin and Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn LPs though.

  13. I was the person who suggested the video to Retsupurae, which is how they found it out and RP'd it.

I guess the entire reason why I wanted it Retsupurae'd wasn't because I thought Mageknight404 was a bad LPer, nor did I think that he didn't put any work into it because he clearly did.

The fact of the matter is that it is a Pokemon Let's Play that is meant to showcase a game which he himself said he loved, yet he does so using a self-insertion gimmick that has divided his audience. It's not endearing, it's not normal in my mind, it's creepy and unneccesary.

Pokemon is meant to have a silent protagonist, we are meant to root for them throughout the Let's Play. By making your character unlikeable (which Hilda is), it makes the LPer seem like an asshole, which he really isn't judging by the other videos he has done.

In a way I feel both happy and guilty this video was shown to the masses, since it's sparked a debate as to whether or not this is good. Make your own decisions about me for suggesting the video but I felt like this needed to be shared.

    1. OK, I know this was years ago but...now that this LP has long since finally ended, I think I need to bring up that, for all the problems that have been covered here, there's one huge, truly insidious problem that went overlooked.

And it it this: Ray did not get the story he was playing through and claimed to love so much. His treatment of N's character and what he does with the climax of N's arc in the game, where N realizes THE ENTIRE FUCKING MESSAGE OF THE GAME'S STORY, really showcase this. He had Hilda treat N's epiphany (where N has stock animation that Ray uses to justify deeming him a "smug bastard") like it was a bad thing of him to do/say and slap him in the face for saying it. And then she goes on this dumbass "Just accepting other ideas rather than rejecting them isn't enough! Pokemon battles are GOOD, period! You're a monster for having dared want to end them as a practice, and your crimes cannot be excused or forgiven! You're wrong and you're bad and I hate you!" tangent that is at TOTAL ODDS with what the two heroes' story was meant to be all about - coming to an understanding with each other and NOT forcing one's truth/ideal on another who might not agree with it.

And then there's how Ray talks about N. How does this dude learn that a young man has been emotionally abused, groomed, brainwashed and exploited for almost HIS WHOLE LIFE up to this point, with the confines of that room of his not being "his childhood room", but HIS ENTIRE WORLD prior to being let out into Unova on a journey and one that he still has returned to and played in even recently due to how stunted his growth has been, and is doing everything he's been doing out of an innocence and purity that has been weaponized by his horrible abusive father...and still act as though it changes nothing about the view of N as an inexcusably evil monster who needs to be stopped and that N himself is largely at fault for having not fought the effects of his own upbringing well enough? The proper reaction would be to have a better understanding of N's perspective and COMPASSION for him; even if battling him is unavoidable and he needs to be taken down, the desire should be to SAVE him from his current path because he's a Hero too and deserves a chance to broaden his horizons and learn how to deal with things the right way. What hurts is that Hilda actually comes close to that response, but Ray talks her out of it. Hell, the LP even ENDS with more N bashing and smug congratulatory words about Hilda's "epic" takedown of him from Ray and Hilda! I don't think even Ghetsis received the same level of ire and revulsion that was given to N. It's so against everything that the story in these games was meant to stand for that it honestly legit disgusts me. If this guy went this whole game thinking of N as being evil or "sociopathic" (his own words), then he missed the whole point and never truly appreciated the story to begin with.

If anything, I honestly came out with the impression that Hilda and N, heroes of ideals and truth, were kindred spirits in a way - both of them need to liberate themselves from the control of a selfish, abusive guy who's only using them for their own personal ambitions or pleasure.
