From bad to worse

Well it's just about official. MD3 has the worst Pokémon selection of any game ever. Worse than RBY, which had the excuse of only 151 even existing at the time. The tally here is allegedly 144, plus a few legendaries that can't even be recruited to begin with.

Seems like the logic that went into this game was this.

  1. I'm starting to wonder if we should just call this Mystery Dungeon 4. I mean it looks like it has near as many features as the Wiiware versions which had almost as many pokemon in each game.

    1. There hasn't been an MD3, so of course this isn't MD4. But it isn't 3 either. This is chucked in the "Wiiware MD Games" category as certifiable shit.

That picture is absolutely hilarious until you realise that it's TRUE.

    2. I just said that because Slow called it MD3. But in all seriousness according to serebii page on the wiiware versions each of those over 130 exclusive pokemon while this allegedly has over 140 pokemon. Not to mention weren't the wiiware versions WAY cheaper?

  2. Meh, I hope the music atleast is on par with the earlier installments

  3. It could be worse. They could screw up everything else that we do not know if they screwed them up yet...

  4. I've read the entire discovery thread now and to be fair, they did try some new nice elements, like accessing Friend Mode in the middle of a long dungeon for a change of pace and restocking on some items by doing different missions. But... it's the only positive feature I've found as of now.

If they wanted to put so many solo run dungeons, they could at least have made Turtwig available as a starter, right ? :P

    1. Yeah, there ARE a few positives, which just makes me wonder what would happen had those features been in a true successor to MD2. As it stands now I just want to cry myself to sleep. What a waste of an opportunity to craft a masterpiece that would forever mark the gaming industry.

    2. To be fair, Slow, it may be that we will see a proper sequel with all of those features in the future. It will be a bit diminished in value, but it will still work.

    3. Even though you cannot evolve stuff until the post-game, so then we would not be able to have a Torterra solo run. At least the game will not be the Sonic Next Gen of Pokemon. Pokemon is like Mega Man. Some may not find it fun, but there are no Sonic Next Gen-bad games there. Even X6, X7, and Super Adventure Rockman could be reasonably argued are not all that bad. Not as good as the masterpieces, sure, but not as bad as, again, Sonic Next Gen. How Pokemon fits into this is so: you dislike the Gen 3 GameCube games. That is your taste. Mind you, I have never played them, but I really do not like Double Battles. Some people love that stuff. Revolution is at least decent in that you can battle in 3D, for what little that is worth. MD3 is understandable of being disappointing because MD2 is widely regarded, as well as Pokemon Conquest, as the quintessential Pokemon side-game experience. Whether the game downright sucks depends on what else Serebii puts on his website, as well as how the game itself plays...

I apologize if that does not help you, or if it ticks you off that I do not fully understand your situation, Slow (I kind of do, just not fully). Even if I did, I am not exactly the best at conveying positive emotions. I sincerely wish this were all a bad dream for you, and that you could just wake up, and everything would be better. Sadly, Fate is a cruel mistress...

    4. You raise a good point, but anyone who says that X6 isn't 'all that bad' is lying. I'd easily rather play Sonic '06 over that piece of shit - at least the former's doable.

    5. X6 still is not quite the level of obviously unfinished as Sonic Next Gen. Granted, it DOES look unfinished, what with the bad translation, no English VA, among other things. ClementJ642 said he would gladly play X6 with a smile than Sonic Next Gen...

    6. Sonic 06? Doable? Well, you've either never played that glitch filled mess, or you've never seen anyone. The only group I've ever seen do that game with any degree of professionalism was HellfireComms, and even the two commenters were losing their sanity by the end of the run!

(and as for playing it to know it isn't doable... last level. Gravity/box tossing spheres. You may now cry.)

    7. SomeCallMeJohnny of the SuperGamingBros seemed professional in his playthrough. BrainScratchComms was entertaining in its playthrough. ClementJ642 did an excellent review of it. All of them wanted it to end as soon as possible. I have had the displeasure of playing the crap. I ragequitted with Silver at the desert stage (I did not even get to the ball puzzle) and Crisis City for Sonic (Mach speed section). Anyone who thinks X6 is or looks worse than Next Gen is certifiably insane. X6 at least looks like it is decent aside from glaring flaws and ridiculous fake difficulty. X7 is basically the same thing without the difficulty. I need not actually play through Next Gen to know that it is a piece of crap...

  5. This is worse than Snap and the original Japan only Stadium. At least they had 60 out of 151, which is roughly one third - this is has roughly one sixth of Pokemon in it.

    1. Hopefully, the original Stadium will prove to be the best example of what this is - terrible, but followed up with a vastly superior product.

  6. I dunno. Between the 3D models and the amount of cutscenes, dungeons, and potential DLC taking up most of the data, it's semi-understandable that we don't get that big a selection of Pokemon. We have to remember, though, that the 3DS, at the end of the day, is just a portable console, and doesn't have the capabilities of a PS3, or even a Wii. But again, I'm just speculating why we don't get as much as we want out of this game, and I'll wait to play it, experience the story mode for myself, and ultimately judge it for myself based on that.

The fact that hunger doesn't come into play until post-game dungeons does concern me, but hey, at least I'm never gonna have to deal with Ominous Wind-spamming Drifloons.

    1. Bull-fucking-shit. If someone can stick ALL of what they did in Kingdom Hearts 3D in one game (just for an example), then Nintendo can teach the secrets of how to compress to Chunsoft and Gamefreak.

  7. I always wanted to get into the mystery dungeon series but im guessing this isn't the one to start with...

    1. I would suggest 1 if only because of its ease of emulation (and apparent ease of bosses; I have not gotten that far). However, everyone is saying that MD2 and Pokemon Conquest are the best Pokemon spin-offs, so I would buy 2 if you can find it...

    2. I tried first game and honestly, I found it way more tedious than it should have been. If what I understood from all the comments I've seen so far is right, then there is no actual continuity in the storyline between the 2 games, so it's not that big of a deal to start with the second one... and stick to it for a while...

    3. MD1 had a lot of annoyances that were done away in MD2. Try Explorers of the Sky, it's amazing.

  8. It's rather unfortunate.
I was really looking forward for something new Pokemon-related that was good on the 3DS, and mystery dungeon looked like it could be promising.

    1. It is not new, but Rumble Blast is pretty good. For the vanilla DS, I mentioned earlier that people consider Conquest a contender for best Pokemon spin-off. With the fun I have playing it, it might be justified. If you want a NEW great Pokemon game, Gen 6 will probably come out about...2014, give or take. Granted, Game Freak is trying different things, so we know not...

    2. As far as I know, Gamefreak does none of the spin-offs, just the main series. Mystery Dungeon is made by Chunsoft, Conquest by Koei, etc.

    3. I was mainly referring to the main games when I said Game Freak was trying something different. Yeah, everyone else is trying to do something different with the spin-offs. Wonder how a video game adaptation of the Trading Card Game like the ones on Game Boy Color would fare with non-pchysophrenic (spelled that wrong, probably) AI...

    4. I don't think that would work since they use some special codes that you can get in various pre-built decks and booster packs to play online on the official website. It would ruin the whole point. It's unfortunate, especially since the card game is actually pretty balanced now. Even more than Yu-Gi-Oh, surprisingly. Sure, you got some overpowered Ex Pokemon cards, but what most of the internet media don't say, it's that they are actually "high risk, high reward" kind of cards because your opponent get 2 prize cards out of the 6 needed to win the game if he KOs it.

  9. Maybe this should have just been a 3DS e-shop game.

  10. I just saw the final boss of this game. It looks surprisingly lazy... (no offense slowflake)

    1. Dark Rust was a lazy idea for a final boss, but that didn't stop the fight against him from being... well, memorable at the least (Though for me it was short. Getting a Speedy Electrode with Electro Ball won the game for me.)

      Delete
    2. Now that I think of it, isn't Dark Rust the only non-Pokémon opponent in the entire franchise, barring Pokéstar Studios stuff? (Now watch as I forget something really obvious and make a fool out of myself.)

      Delete
    3. You might be forgetting those really odd Ghosts in the Pokemon Tower. Then again they are masking Pokemon so they probably don't count.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, accualy is pogeymanz when you look through the Silph Scope.

    5. I hate to spoil it but this game's final boss is not a pokemon either. But unlike dark rust where there is no wind up key pokemon, there's already a pokemon that is based on the thing the opponent is based on. (if that makes sense)
