The worst bell curve ever

239 votes later, a surprising amount of people wouldn't mind if I did a U-turn and started making big fat bucks for LPing. Well, maybe big fat pennies, which are getting abolished soon, so I'm left with nothing. Still, you weren't nearly as harsh as I thought you would. I expected the results to have a nice bell curve, but seems like that bell was clobbered with a baseball bat or ten. Well, five people said "instant unsub", but I wouldn't blame you after everything I said. That was the major factor for many of you, since I've repeated my opposition to making money off these videos so many time. 56 voters said they'd be very annoyed and disappointed, ant 47 would be a bit peeved. A shocking 111 wouldn't care at all, even after all the approval I got over how I handled things, which I thought translated to a disdain for partnership or something like that. Finally, 22 voters think I should've accepted the first offer YouTube made to me over two years ago.

The real fun part is this: I expected more generalized annoyance at the prospect of monetization, not just because of my hardline stance, but because of the... unsavory types any kind of partnership would attract, and a certain obligation to keep them around because they make me money. They'd be stupid, they'd smell, they'd troll, but hey, free money. Food for thought.

No new poll for now, I'm drawing a blank. Sorry.

  1. You could potentially do a poll about who owns Black and White 2, considering a large portion of your fanbase is North American.

...Actually, I just realized the European release date is Friday, so maybe it would be best to hold off on a poll like that.

Or you could ask which new features of BW2 people like the best, like medals, Join Avenue, easy/challenge mode, etc.

  2. I know there are some pretty bad cases out there like Machinema, but my experience with the people I watch on Youtube that are partners has been largely positive. The adds are kind of annoying, but tolerable as most of these people (that I watch anyway) are college kids trying to make a few extra bucks on the side. My thought process on the matter is basically this, I don't really approve, but I think it's ultimately that persons decision to do whatever it is they choose.

  3. I would suggest a poll about which new dual-types of Pokemon people would like to see the most for Gen 6, but I know how you hate suggestions. :P

  4. What does it really matter to the viewer if you have partnership or not? If you find one that works with you and still gives you the freedom to do what you want with your channel, what harm will a few adds cause the viewers? The ones that bitch will either use add blockers or unsub, leaving you with the true fans sticking by you. Having been watching you since Emerald, I thought you deserved partnership a long time ago, though understood why you didn't take it. You've said it before, though. It's your channel, and you'll do with it as you please.

    1. That's kind of a faulty logic, because if you think people who are "bitching" aren't true fans and you put AdBlock users among them, they will probably still watch his videos, thus still leaving a lot of "fake" fans.

I would just be disappointed to see him go back on his word after he bashed Youtube and denied any form of partnership for so long. It would never prevent me from still enjoying his videos. That's not being a fake fan, it's just the kind of person I am. I just enjoy people's videos/reviews/opinions/whatever much more when they have my respect.

  5. I honestly do not mind one way or the other. If you decide to change your mind and become a partner, then that's really none of my business. Likewise if you don't. I have AdBlock, and I could not tell you which of the users I'm subscribed to are partners or not, though I suppose I might be able to guess from their subscriber counts. I know how much you want to avoid the vast swarms of typical YouTube commenters, so whatever. I can put up with Chugga's audience, so... yeah. Complete indifference.

I thought I heard you briefly mention in a recent video (like the last 5 or 10) that you should make a poll about something, but I forgot what it was. I might not be remembering that right, though.

  6. Aren't there legal aspects to consider?

You would be distributing techinally pirated game footage for cash.

It's all harmless commentary until there is money involved. That's when the lawyers smell blood.

    1. This argument might have worked, had there not been countless LPers, casters, etc. that already gain money from doing just that.

    2. It took them a while grab Sean Parker too.

The law is fuzzy around digital media, and it's not easy to charge someone.
But with pirating at an all time high, scrutiny on Google and Youtube rising (Privacy scandals, terrorism causing videos), and of course super rich media lobbyists, it's only a matter a time.

Just pray that "Let's play" stays out of the mainstream, and don't end up on the wrong side of things when it sadly but inevitably goes down.
I gotta say I love your work. I don't wanna see you take a hit.

    3. Remember the Conjopi saga from a few years ago, which got Chuggaaconroy and many other high-profile LPers banned? We already went through that phase, and in the end YouTube itself got involved and pretty much recognized LPing as fully legitimate.

  7. I for one lose respect for anyone who sells out for a youtube partnership, so I applaud Slowflake's resistance to the prospect.
