New poll: Got Conquest?

Turns out, this place has a pretty negative opinion of Pikachu-related marketing, even if we tolerate it more than I do. Out of 299 voters, 88 think it gives the franchise a bad image, while 153 others think they should make a better effort promoting other Pokémon more. 39 people are more or less neutral, 7 say it doesn't matter at all, and 12 say if anything, they should market it more. Can't tell if trolling or shockingly honest. Possibly a little bit of both.

Today's poll: have you got Conquest, and how far are you in it?

  1. Don't have it and not interested. Can't seem to vote in the poll for some reason, though.

    1. I had trouble voting too. Keep trying, it might work.

  2. You should have had an option for "No and I'm undecided on getting it" because that's my stance.

  3. I'm sure you already know my answer, but whatever.

I would have liked this game no matter if Pokemon were in it or not. This particular genre of Tactical RPGs is my second favorite right below the main Pokemon games themselves. I just find them so addicting. Too bad that it becomes easier as you get an access to more types. I was pretty worried about fighting Terrera at first, but turns out that Shingen's Rhyperior was more barks than bites. Sure, it still hits like a truck, but for a move with no area of effect, being able to attack only once per 2 turns is a pretty big drawback. Even that freaking wind gave me much more trouble than Rhyperior did... pretty sad.

The thing that bothers me the most with the game is how you can't dismiss any Warrior. Seriously, what were they thinking ? I don't always know in advance when new unique Warlords will be available, so I just hire regular Warriors having a best link with a Pokemon that interest me whenever I can. But now, I'm seriously lacking space. That's stupid !

    1. Yes, you can dismiss warriors. Whenever you hire a new one and you dispatch him in a full kingdom, you can choose which one to fire.

Also, I agree on Shingen, as I said in my LP. Pretty sad that Roggenrola is better than Rhyperior, but the worst part is that I think only the hero and Nobunaga have higher link requirements than him to evolve. Ouch.

And don't worry about the main game, it's just a glorified tutorial. The episodes are when the real game begins, and trust me when I say they're a blast. You're not facing mono-type teams with one wild card anymore, the armies you'll be challenging are quite literally all over the place.

    2. Oh... Thanks I guess. I couldn't find any clear information about this anywhere. I guess that's what somebody sort of said on GameFAQs, but either I read it too fast or the explanation itself wasn't that great because I didn't understand at all.

It feels weird to play such a recent game for once. It's hard to find complete info for minor gameplay issues like that.

I look forward to finishing the main game then, because I somehow enjoyed being pushed to my limits in my first fight against Hideyoshi. This is the first game in which I don't find time limits as annoying and where I think they are actually relevant for challenge purposes.

  4. About the Pikachu poll... I am one of the 7 that don't mind the Pikachu thing. Yellow version was my first Pokémon game (heck, I replay it at least once a year nowadays), and I was a diehard fanatic for the show back in the day. I kind of got weaned off the anime around mid-Hoenn. Pikachu therefore has some hardcore nostalgia value for me. I wouldn't use it competitively, of course, but Pikachu is probably my second-favorite character to use in the Super Smash Bros series, behind Falco.

It may give the franchise a bad image for would-be fans, I do admit, but everyone outside of Japan is in the periphery demographic anyways. If they were to market to focus on some other "cool" Pokémon instead, then they would potentially lose out on some of their current audience. However, they really are marketing other stuff! Pikachu is simply the series mascot, so they can put its face on something and everyone with a vague knowledge of the franchise would say, "Oh! It's a Pokémon!". If they were to release an Arceus DS or something, then all but diehard Pokemon fans wouldn't recognize it.

    1. You're entitled to your own opinion, it doesn't sound troll-like at all to begin with. It's a valid point that them marketing Pikachu so much leads into it being so recognizable that they don't have much of a choice to do it more and more.

  5. Bah, Shingen Haters gonna Hate. That thing twoshotted Rayquaza for me and tanked two Dragon Pulses, it's good in my book.

And I'm on Kenshin's episode. Now, that Gallade, it has no haters and anyone who does hate it is insane. Nothing holding you back from a pretty powerful 2 space hitting Death attack.

    1. Although, getting this game locked me out of Rumble Blast for about a month, so I don't have that. Maybe that should be the next poll?

    2. I will say that Shingen helped me a great deal in the main story, but that was mostly because it's the longest tutorial ever made, and Ujiyasu wasn't available.

  6. My brother got it and found it boring. Then again, he's not really the tactical sort, so I can see why he wouldn't. I on the other hand am very much into my turn-based strategy, so he gave it to me. Free Conquest woo. I haven't had much time to play it so far, but I'm really enjoying it. Next stop, Violight!

Oh, and I am bringing Jigglypuff to endgame. Get at me Nobunaga!

    1. I think you're forced to do so anyway... But if you meant that you won't evolve it, then... Cool I guess ?

    2. Wait really? Aww. And here I thought I was being hardcore. Nah, I'll probably evolve it, I'm not that crazy.

    3. Oh wait, I had a brainfart there. What I meant is that you absolutely have to bring Oichi to the Endgame. But to be honest, you'd better let Unique Warlords keep their best link Pokemon as much as possible since they obviously become much more powerful later on. Although for the main story you can use any Pokemon with a link that goes at least over 60% and still be just fine.

  7. I haven't been able to find it yet! It's been sold out everywhere I've looked the past couple of months. I'm hoping to get it before the end of the year so I can get the events for it. By the way, do I just have to download them before the end of the year, or do I have to download them and play them? I don't want to miss out.

Also, I have to complain about the DS's stupid wireless settings. I have to use a WEP password or a public network to get it to work, both of which are stupid to use on a home connection. I guess I'll just have to leech off of some place that has free wi-fi again. The 3DS (I just got the XL) has a much better system. I can use my connection with WPA2 protection, so I can play Kid Icarus online at home!

And yes, the vanilla DS' online was garbage. I had to use the Wi-Fi dongle just to not have to use WEP. The DSi fixed that as far as I'm aware though.

  8. I think I've done about 8 or 9 of the episodes. I played the main story all in one go and with the episodes I've just been picking them up in my spare time. I really enjoyed it. My only complaint was the fact that once you beat a story your entire army disperses. I know they aren't gone forever but I'm still not thrilled my getting them back is just a chance as to whether or not I run into them. That being said I feel it's the best spin-off next to the Mystery Dungeon series.

Also, it may just be me, but did you notice that there are a few glitches here and there when it comes to recruiting. You'll fight warriors that use say a Munchlax for instance, once the battle is over you can recruit them, but now their team consists of an Ekans and a Pansear with Munchlax nowhere to be found. Not a huge deal, just something I noticed in my game.

    1. It's an intended mechanic. It happens when you recruit someone you've recruited in a previous episode or the main story.

  9. Hm, I didn't know that. Not sure I completely understand the reasoning behind it. Why would recruiting someone you've already had be a negative thing.

  10. No, and I'm not interested in it either. Well, it looks a bit interesting, but I'll do fine without it. Though my opinion may change later on.

  12. I've just beaten the main story and started Hideyoshi's Episode. The jump in difficulty is already noticeable, I'm expecting an attack at any moment of weakness within any of my nations. I guess that managing my Warriors and linking with various Pokemon beside the "Best Link" will become much more important now.

(Seeing Dragnor growing so fast is also very scary...)

    1. Wait until some armies just get massive power boosts out of nowhere (you'll be notified when that happens, it's not something that's kept hidden). I beat Hideyoshi's scenario by the skin of my teeth because Kotarou and his entire army almost tripled in strength once I conquered the whole west half of the map, and Masamune had a pretty big boost as well at the same time.

    2. Now it's just between me, Nobunaga and Kotaro... I own the entire South-West (Violight, Pugilis and everything below) of the map while Kotaro owns Yaksha and Cragspur. The rest belongs to Nobunaga... The two remaining CPUs have been fighting for Cragspur several times now and Nobunaga keeps his borders in check so I can't safely attack...
Ranmaru's Dragonair already has a power of 300 while I just reached 200 with the core of my army and I have nothing to take care of Dragon types yet...

      I'm screwed already, right ?

    3. Keep going for the weak links and grind like hell, that's how I pulled it off. And if an opportunity to knock someone off the map (probably Kotarou, the way you're talking about it) presents itself, take it. On that note, avoid fighting floaters in Valora as much as humanly possible. I got destroyed there by a floater army, then the very next month the same battle took place but in Avia, and I won handily.

    4. Well... Now that you mention it. Nobunaga didn't actually risk an attack yet because I'm doing my best to keep up with the power of the Warriors he stationed in Illusio and Terrera. I guess I have to hope that Kotaro will be able to hold on and keep pressuring him long enough for me to have enough firepower to attack. I should probably train a Spheal for the Dragonair too, after all, the reason I mentionned it is because it is in Illusio right now... and Nobunaga himself is in Terrera... My only advantage is that I was lucky enough to encounter several of my old warriors from the Main Story, so I already own a lot of fully evolved Pokemon like Lilligant, Chandelure, Gyarados and many others.

But I FINALLY received my copy of Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for the PSP that I had ordered on Internet and I want to try it out, so I guess that'll have to wait until later. :P
