Poll change: BW2 can't get here fast enough

Of course, it might be because I'm preaching to the choir, but 175 out of 236 voters want BW2 to GET OUT FASTER. I can see why, because while not revealing too much, CoroCoro highlighted the potential the game has very well. 54 are reasonably pleased but think the game could be better based on what we know, six say they're not impressed, and a single voter thinks the game will crash and burn. Oddly enough, that one voter even left a comment saying he can't wait to buy BW2 to see it fail. Looks like SOMEONE bought Sonic 1 in that legendary Sonic 4 boycott.

Next question: which generation is your favorite Pokémon from? Note that I'm not talking about which gen you like the best, I'm talking about your single favorite Pokémon. For example, if your favorite is Torterra, you'd vote for gen 4, even if overall you like gen 3 the best. Anywhere else I'd expect gen 1 to dominate, but this community is far more open to newer Pokémon than most others, so once again, preaching to the choir?

Oh, here's an additional question you could answer in the comments. Have we gotten to the point where there are so many Pokémon that you couldn't tell in which generation some of them originated off the top of your head?

  1. I get confused by a few who are more common in a older generation then the one they debuted. An example of this with me is the Remoraid Line. Its mainly 2nd and 3rd I mix up. 1st seems to be set in stone from childhood, and 4 & 5 are the two I've played most recently/often.

I voted 4th Gen for Toxicroak, underrated competitively IMO and quite cool design wise. 3rd and 5th were quite close with Salamence and Scrafty respectively.

    1. I've seen some people claim Meditite, Medicham and Chimecho were gen 4 because they're so rare in RSE, so I see where you're coming from.

  2. I'm quite excited for the game, and I'm sure it'll be a success. This is a good direction to go in-- an actual sequel within the same region rather than a deluxe version of the generation. (Of course, that isn't to say that Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum were bad by any means).

I've been a total Poketard ever since I was a kid, so I personally don't mix up Pokemon from any generation (I know many friends that do, but only with a few).

I voted 2nd gen. It's hard to pick a single favorite Pokemon, but I like Heracross a lot, and it's the first one that came to my head.

  3. I always think Slugma is Gen III, but indeed it's Gen II. But that thing is so rare in Gen II, and you see it a lot in Gen III.

  4. Meh, I don't have a favorite Pokemon, but I had the most favorites in gen V. Gen III had some pretty good ones too, then Gen IV was pretty okay. Gen I and II had absolute terrible Pokemon IMO. I also used to think Skarmory was a gen III Pokemon, and I was surprised when I found out it was gen II. I mean, when is one time you actually see a Skarmory in gen II on a linear play-through? I never saw one when I played the game, but I might just have bad memory.

  5. I haven't mixed up which pokemon came from which generation yet, but if you asked me to name all the pokemon from a given generation then I probably wouldn't remember some off the top of my head, just because some of them are really forgettable in general. Memorizing and categorizing 649 pokemon is no easy task!

As for the other poll question, I say gen 3 because I really love Absol. I'm tempted to go with gen 4 though just because it made Absol so much better that it could be considered a new debut. Gen 4 gave it SOOOO many things that it really benefited from: the physical-special split (base 130 attack with no physical stab is a definite no-no), Super Luck and access to plenty of high-critical moves, Sucker Punch, etc., etc...

  6. I have no problem identifying pokemon names or the generation they come from. (I've only been playing for 1 year)

  7. Funnily enough, my favourite Pokémon is the only one you've mentioned by name: Torterra. I literally cannot pick another starter in D/P/P, it just doesn't feel right at all, even though the other two are such viable choices.

As for the extra question, no. I dunno why, but I usually have quite a good memory for things like that, remembering WHEN something happened.

  8. Hydreigon... Just Hydreigon
If only it was faster... That Special Attack could be used for so much more. Second place though is Chandelure, another Pokemon that suffers from average speed.

  9. Mewtwo would be mine. Fast, reasonably bulky, hits bloody hard through both defenses. Yeah, the third best Pokemon is my favorite. Also, is it bad that at first, I thought Froslass was a Gen V Pokemon before doing the research?...

  10. This reminds me of a little quiz I took at http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~msandbot/pokemon/ to discover my favorite Pokémon. It is interesting how what my favorites a few months ago are not the same as now. Maybe it is because it is fundamentally flawed (that quiz takes FOREVER, and after a while I just didn't find it in me to care), but the Pokémon I currently consider my favorite (Sudowoodo) did not even make it in the top 10 (the quiz said Venusaur was my fave). Guess I'm fickle like that.

I never had any problem whatsoever saying what generation a Pokémon is from, but some other trivia about the games (like what games a specific item, move, or ability premiered in) can really trip people up. I mean stuff like Light Ball, Kinesis, Sand Stream, etc.

    1. I took that same quiz thing around a month or so ago and it said my fave poké was Ralts(Yeah freaking RALTS of all things?) and it was almost right though. With my fave being Gallade and all.
And for the other poll sometimes I think that Deoxys is a Gen 4 poké.

    2. Which reminds me, assuming gen 6 launches next year and the Genesect movie comes out a few months beforehand, I wonder if we might see some people think Genesect is a gen 6 Pokémon (at least among those who don't know it exists yet)?

  11. I'm probably going t have to go with Breloom here. I always admired it's performance in competitive battles with Poison Heal, that fairly buff attack stat, and the Dreamworld ability Technician.

As for your second question, I personally believe that the answer is no. Maybe it's because I generally have a good memory, but even with 649 of them, I never have trouble telling which one is from which Generation. Although, I must say, memorizing those English names did take a while

  12. For me it's hard to chose between Gen 4 and Gen 5. There's actually a tie between Gallade and Chandelure for my favorite Pokemon.

The only thing I can do to decide between these two is checking in which Generation are my other favorites.

Gen 4 is then the winner and the honorable mentions are all the starters (Especially Torterra), Bronzong, Chatot, Magmortar and many other previous Gen evolutions.

It's ironic, because it was the generation I liked less.
(Do not read "dislike" or "hate" here. Gen 4 was also awesome in its own way. I just didn't like Sinnoh as much as the other regions for some reasons I don't even know myself.)

Honorable mentions for other Gens are : Venusaur, Dragonite, Typhlosion, Lanturn, Lunatone and Rayquaza.

  13. Gen V since Oshawott and his line are some of my favorite designs.

As for your second question, while I can't list all of them off the top of my head I'm usually pretty good at telling which generation they're from. Though since I didn't play Generation III, when I first played Diamond I made the mistake of thinking that some of the Hoenn Pokemon were Gen IV.

  14. As someone who is getting very close to being able to name each and every Pokemon in numerical order, I'd say I don't get confused very often. I'm currently at the point where if someone gives me the name of a Pokemon, I can guess it's national dex number + or - 5. And Grovyle if my favorite Pokemon, so Gen 3 it is. Although I will admit that when Black and White first came out Dewott came really, really, REALLY close to snagging that title.

  15. If somebody asked what gen a Pokemon was from I would know it right away, other than a few exceptions.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Gotta say mawile as my favorite, despite it not being a very good pokemon in general I've just always liked it anyway.

And funnily enough. only generations I mix up maybe 20 or so pokemon from would be Gen 3 and Gen 4 and the rest I have no trouble keeping straight

    ReplyDelete
  17. I can still remember where all of the Pokemon come from. And my favorite will probably always be Espeon. Not for its stats, but because I think it's cool.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Blastoise is my favourite, for design (a turtle with freaking cannons) and nostalgia - it was my first Pokémon after all. And I can definitely match any Pokémon to its gen, since I've been playing for about 12 years.

  19. Lotad.
As for the second question, I can't keep straight Gen V names in my head, but if I was given a picture I could recognize them. I would probably be able to deduce that they're Gen V by process of elimination since I know Gens I-IV.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Loves me some Espeon. But, I haven't had any problem connecting Pokemon to their generations, but that may just be because I'm such a Pokenerd.

Also, I'm a bit surprised how split down the middle are the votes are, besides Gen3. (It's almost like your poll is flipping me off.)

    ReplyDelete
  21. My favorites are Zangoose, Salamence and Espeon, so Gen 3 wins. Shadow Lugia looked beast, too.

And I can name all of the generations for the most part, but some Gen 2 pokemon I think started in gen 1 when they really didn't.

  22. And yes, I know Espeon is gen 2 but that's still 2/3 for R/S/E.

  23. Well, i can't vouch for sure, but i think that i could for the most part pick the gen off the top of my head, but don't expect me to remember them by name if they're newer than G2.
(Haven't played the games so much, only via E, but the anime i saw as a kid, and still like.)

  24. My favourite's Pidgeot (I don't care what you think about it, I still like it), so I picked Gen I. And I can tell what each generation every Pokemon is from, but when I was younger, I used to think that Lapras was a Gen II Pokemon.

  25. Blaziken for me. I was upset when Infernape stole the typing and everyone loved it more. Since I don't play competitively and don't care that I can't use Blaziken, I got the last laugh as it was moved to ubers because of Speed Boost.

As some people said above, I get confused by Remoraid, Slugma, and Skarmory. Gen 1 is pretty easy to distinguish, I was obsessed with the games when I was a kid. Gen 2 is the hardest for me, as there were a LOT of Pokemon that just didn't show up. (Houndour, Murkrow, etc.) Gen 3 came with a lot of my favorites and I played them a lot. Gen 4 and 5 blend together somewhat, but I find they have very distinct art styles. Also, Gen 5 Pokemon follow themes in a lot of cases.

  26. I have to go with gen 1 definitely my favourite is venusaur draginite and mewtwo

  27. Steelix. It's not the best steel type out there, but it does a hell of a job being awesome and looking awesome.

People on the TSG forums may know that I aim to complete my pokedex and you want to know which generation was missing the most pokemon? Generation 4. I had no idea I was missing all of those pokemon but apparently I was.

  28. My favourite is probably Electivire - and I'm loving how Generation III is leading in the polls even though so many people used to say they hated the Pokémon from that generation. (Though it may just be a lot of people who like Salamence or Deoxys or something.)

And as a player from the start, and someone who's got a complete Pokédex, I have no problem naming what Generation birthed what Pokémon. Tbh I'm surprised the amount of commenters that are saying they get mixed up with some Pokémon. xD

    1. Yeah, one thing I'm really wondering if it's just, like, two or three Pokémon that really boost gen 3's number.

And I pointed this out elsewhere, but if you were to show these poll numbers to people that frequent more mainstream sites, they'd go bat**** insane at gen 1 being below 90%, let alone 20%.

      Delete
    2. Oh, and for the record, this generally mirrors the pattern where gen 3 used to be the series' black sheep, but now it's everyone's favorite. I'm still betting on gen 4 being the most popular in a couple years.

  29. Obvious vote for Gen2... if you haven't guessed by TheShinyFERALIGATR, then I cannot provide you any more help.

Actually, about the generation thing... I find myself having to fix that A LOT recently. Not for myself, oh no, but for my friends who like the games. Because I have a few of those. Including one into the TCG, which sucks, because he has a Durant deck, and that's horrible.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you think a Durant deck is that horrible, you obviously have never played Magic The Gathering. I really hope they won't go farther with these "Decking" effects, Pokemon TGC is not the kind of game where you can afford losing even a single card.

  31. I was on the internet last night and I saw something that has kept me thinking. They said that they wanted for the post-game of BW2 to be that you go to Hoenn and truthfully this idea does not sound like it would be good. The reason they say this is because why do they give you the Dive HM for only one area in the first game of the game and the fact that in the first game it tells you that N has gone off to a distant region. I can't completely rule it out, but I just feel that it is unlikely that it is going to happen. But on the other hand Nintendo has been surprising us a lot lately.
