My Little Pony vs. Tumblr

I'll preface this by saying I don't care one bit for MLP, and think anyone who openly labels themselves as a brony (and by that I really mean the chunk of the fanbase that obsesses over it in a disturbing manner) needs to seek some help, but this is way too funny not to mention. Apparently the latest episode (a two-parter, for the record) had a dig at the SJW culture. From what I've heard (because no way am I watching that show for 40 milliseconds, let alone 40 minutes), the whole thing is a reductio ad absurdum of their view of the world, giving a glimpse of what it would be like if Tumblr ran things. And let's be honest: it's absolutely hilarious to see (ostensibly) grown men and women get their bullshit called out by a show aimed at preschool girls. So of course they don't like it one bit, with the word "boycott" sometimes being cited. And I love it. It took some time, but at last something good came out of this stupid craze, huh?

  1. I don't really think we as Pokemon fans are in a position to judge somebody for watching shows meant for kids. I feel like our fanbase is one of the more inclusive ones, with many people 30+ playing Pokemon it's perfectly fine, and that's one of the things that I like about the community. I don't personally watch MLP, but I have a well-adjusted older brother-in-law who does, and he has a life and friends and a job and such. The weird side of the fanbase is the one everybody talks about because it's weird, but I don't see that as a representation for everybody.

I suppose I don't like seeing judgments like that because there are lots of things I do that would warrant judgment of that kind from people who think they're above entertainment made for kids. I play Pokemon and other Nintendo franchises, I still am entertained by Spongebob (which I watched as a kid), I love Disney and Pixar movies and still go to the theaters for them (recent examples being The Lego Movie and Frozen, both of which I loved), I read fantasy novels meant for a child or young teen demographic (Deltora Quest, Eragon, etc.) and more. I wouldn't want someone thinking that I don't have my life together or that I'm a pedophile or something.

    1. I -did- mention the term "brony", and I did so unironically. I was literally talking about the crazier segments of the fanbase. The age thing was in all likelihood redundant, though, since no one that young watches MLP for the street cred, right? I'll give you that much. The issue with the aforementioned crazies is that they make the Sonic fanbase look perfectly sane.

    2. I would agree there is nothing wrong with liking the show even as an adult. As you said, plenty of people really enjoy Spongebob and those guys aren't considered the scum of the Earth. The problem with the MLP fanbase is how it (or atleast part of it) acts. Some people try to push that shit down your throat every chance they get, and of course lame ass memes and videos and disgusting fanfiction is littered about the internet. It's those people that are disliked. Classic case of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch.

  2. I've seen the future and, unfortunately, MLP fanboys will end up conquering the world. However, there's one way we can prevent this tragedy from occurring. We just need to send all bronies to Mars.

    1. RoahmMythril, SomecallmeJohnny, Chuggaaconroy, JoshScorcher, TheMysteriousMrEnter...And those are just the decently popular people I know who happen to be bronies that aren't unhealthily obsessed...

    2. But if we send bronies to Mars then who will make Half-Life 3 with Gaben on Mars?

  4. Bronies are an entire clique of about four or five people in my grade, but they're not quite as insane as some people. My little brother is a brony too, but he's annoying for other reasons. SomecallmeJohnny and Chuggaaconroy at least do not have MLP be the entire content of their channels. Same with TheMysterousMrEnter and JoshScorcher...
With how bad other kids cartoons and even cartoons like Family Guy have gotten, people tend to gravitate towards what they hear is pretty good. Now, their sanity level is an entirely different matter...
It's like Pokemon and Call of Duty, which are mostly bought by the opposite of their intended audience...

  5. And I'm too busy unhealthily obsessing over Touhou to seriously check out MLP...

  6. I personally like the show. Not sure how I feel about the fanbase. I do agree with Giygas avatar guy in that the crazies give everyone a bad name. Probably the only show I've ever watched where I can't explain why I like it very well too. Speaking of Tumblr and SJW's there was a girl who sits in the back of my English class who always talked about SJW stuff and we always joked that she was repeating verbatim what she heard on Tumblr. Then yesterday she mentioned being on Tumblr for 12 hours the day before. I thought that was kind of funny but I also like MLP so may taste may be a bit off.

  7. Is it just me, or has the MLP craze died down a little since 2011-2012? Frozen seems to take the centre stage now from what I've heard.

  8. I used to watch MLP:FiM until they turned the main character into an alicorn and I was like "Nope! Fuck this! I'm done!"

    1. Honestly, I haven't watched the show, but it seems comparable to me to quitting watching Pokémon because Ash actually has beaten a Pokémon League...

    2. From what I've heard, a lot of them jumped ship because they thought the character would become a Mary Sue or otherwise not Patchouli Knowledge as a pony without anemia and asthma...
