Try to crack Nintendo's thought process!

So, the 3DS version of SSB4 will come out a LOT earlier than the Wii U one. Considering how desperately they need to sell the Wii U, and do so NOW, why in the world would they do that? The only reason I can think of is to try and get people even slightly interested in the 3DS version, based on the notion that we all want this game very, VERY badly - and THEN get us to buy the game all over again on Wii U this winter. But... that's a gamble if I've ever seen one. I wouldn't be surprised if many people who really want their SSB fix go for the 3DS version, then pass over the Wii U one (which, in some cases may mean the Wii U altogether).

Right, so... nope. Can't think of any logical reason. Nintendo marketing department, you dumb schmucks. Monkeys on typewriters would do your job better quicker than they would write a single word in Shakespeare's works, let alone all of them.

    1. Imagine if the Fire starter that was announced was Emboar and not Charizard? I think the fanbase would explode.

  2. That's true. Plus, the Wii U version has less announced features so far, with the absence of Smash Run (which looks awesome, by the way, I love City Trial). I mean, what does the Wii U version have over the 3DS version at this point? Better graphics and some different stages, so far. Perhaps it will have a full-fledged adventure mode ala Subspace Emissary that the 3DS version won't have. They're going to have to convince a lot of people that the Wii U version is worth buying even after the 3DS version, and that means it needs a LOT of different features.

This might be a huge problem for Nintendo. Smash Bros. is supposed to be the big system seller for the Wii U, but if they keep doing things to screw it up, this might be the death of it.

    1. My best guess is that they were more specific with the 3DS version because the release window is much closer.

  3. Unless money is an issue there is really no reason not to buy both versions. I could care less which one is out first because I'm going to just end up playing the crap out of both versions anyways.

  4. I find that incredibly dumb. Sure, there are the diehard Nintendo fans who will buy both versions anyway (myself included), but the ones who are either not as diehard or who don't have the luxury of being able to buy both versions (let alone both consoles to begin with) are almost certain to choose the 3DS version between the two since it's cheaper, releases sooner, and is on the better-established system. I honestly don't see the benefit to delaying the release on the system that NEEDS the initial sales more!

  5. I dunno, I can't imagine playing SSB on a handheld. If I get it, it'd only be for the Wii-U. But maybe that's just me -- it's always been something I played with friends in the same room, not online.

Agreed on it making very little sense.

  6. I'm just shocked that the 3DS version will be released during Summer this year! That's rather odd, isn't it? Half the fun of the Brawl release was seeing what characters there would be. Since the 3DS version will have the same characters as the Wii U version, a lot of the hype for these games will be gone by Winter. (unless maybe there's some interesting DLC or something)

My theory is that they just want to make sure there is lots of publicity for the Wii U during this holiday season. For Iwata's sake, I hope that among Mario Kart 8, SSB4, Bayonetta 2, and Hyrule Warriors, they will move a decent number of systems and improve the Wii U numbers from "awful" to "meh" by this time next year and start making money on the thing. It's still very odd that the 3DS version is being released so much sooner. Either they really pushed that version to its limits and no amount of extra time would let them add more stuff, or they are afraid the 3DS version won't sell when released next to the superior Wii U version. Eh...

I should be getting a Wii U by the end of this week, mostly because Target is giving away a $50 gift card for it. Here's to current-gen gaming, I guess.

  7. Am I the only one who's a little sad that Charizard Y doesn't appear?

    1. A little sad doesn't mean boycott. If I went full out unpleasable I'd demand Venusaur as playable. Seriously, I don't know what I'll end up doing with this game, either buy the one that is out first or wait till the more powerful one comes out?

    2. I'm really tired of watching them whore out Charizard X.

      Red has it in Origins.
The MC of the Mega Evolution special has it.
A bunch of Manga characters get it and one of them goes so far as to say it's flat out superior to Charizard Y since the trainer and his Charizard Y have to prove themselves worthy of Charidarite X or something.
You can bet you ass that Ash will get Charizard X too since Charizard used all physical moves except Flamethrower in its latest appearance and it's infamous for its Seismic Toss.

    3. Lol as if the anime writers think of things like matching up physical stats with physical movepools.

  8. Maybe the 3Ds version just got "done" earlier? The 3Ds has a bigger audience, so I guess there's that, and maybe there's the small chance that they've given up hope for the wii U. Nintendo isn't good at getting into the mindset of "what makes the most money?" They're usually stuck in "Hmm, this is what we think is fun, neat, and sensible for our consumers" mode, and unfortunately, not being douchebags is a big handicap right now. Hey, they gave us hyrule history the minute it was printed instead of holding it out on us and keeping us in suspense!

  9. I'm of two minds to be honest. On the one hand, yeah, it does seem like a bit odd to have one come out before the other, but on the other hand by proxy of the two game system that they set up here, no matter how they approach it some of their sales are going to get cannibalized. That being said, I can see the mentality of "here is a taste of the game on 3DS, come spend more money on the "full" version around the holidays". I know the 3DS version is going to have it's exclusive stuff and that's all well and good, but the Wii U version will be the superior experience. By getting not lesser, but lesser version out the door first, sales will probably be better for it than if they had released both at the same time. I don't know, it's kind of been a catch 22 from the word go, but it's Smash, so it will sell regardless.
